2013 Islanders Prospect Poll #7

I'll take the potential of Mayfield any day over Hickey.

I argue for Hickey all the time, but I voted for Mayfield for the same reason. I just think Mayfield's upside is pretty high, given his size, mobility, passing.

I think Nilsson's upside is also high, but I'm not sure where he's at, given his injury/illness from last year and lack of playing time. In the few games I saw him play, he looked pretty raw still, like Koskinen.

I also think Poulin doesn't get any respect.

We'll say "goalies take time" - yet we have little patience for them. Same for defensemen.

I'm the opposite, I argue against Hickey lol.

Here's something to think about in regards to ranking Hickey...

If you had to create an Islander team for the 2018-2019 season from just the players eligible for this prospect poll, where would Hickey rank?

When I cast my votes I'm doing so based in how I think the players would project out 5 years from now. Might Mayfield bust? Sure. Might deHaan never be fully healthy? Sure. However I'd rather roll the dice on guys like that then a guy like Hickey who we can see tops out as a 5/6/7 defenseman.

I go by similar criteria.....considering where they are presently in their development, which one would you rather have? For me, I'll take Mayfield and his upside versus Hickey and his slightly (very) above replacement value-upside. For some though, the "bird in hand" is worth more. There is logic to that.

Danger is that your perception (not you specifically, but many fans) changes as soon as you see them in the NHL.

Do you project Donovan to be better than Hickey? Will that still be true after this season? Do we expect Donovan to be much better than Hickey was last year? If so, at this point next year, how much does the opinion change?

Why are we sure about Hickey topping out at 5/6/7 after one half season?

Well I sure as hell hope that between deHaan, Mayfield, Pokka, Pedan, Pelech, and more we have at least one or more future top 5 d-men there. If we don't and Hickey should be #5/6 on this poll, then our prospect pool is not nearly as good as any of us think.
