Prospect Criteria for the purposes of this poll mimics the ‘Hockey’s Future’ Prospect Criteria: If a prospect is a skater (forward, defenseman) and has played in 65 NHL games or more before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday; or, if a goaltender has played in 45 NHL games before the completion of the season of his 24th birthday, that player will be considered graduated to the NHL. Conversely, if a player completes the season of his 24th birthday without passing those milestones, then that player will no longer be considered a prospect by Hockey’s Future, regardless of the player’s status with his NHL club.

My goal is to have these polls run for 48 hours each and to extend through the top 25 prospects as per hfboards.

Quote from previous poll:

Add Hickey

Me thinks Hickey is gonna SLIIIIIDDDEEEE way down where he honestly doesn't belong. But the shiny new prospects are here (Mayfield, Pedan, Pelech and Pokka).

Yes I think some of those guys will be good but because they haven't played in the NHL yet, they're going to rank higher than Hickey because he struggled against the Crosby's of the NHL.

I just really hope people here realize Hickey is an NHL player vs. POSSIBLE NHL players.

Everybody has their own philosophy, which is what makes this poll so great, and why I like it so much. Don't forget the crowd who make up their own rules and deem players as non prospects in their own mind when they are still eligible (per this website). This skews the numbers and doesn't give the truest indication of the actual field being voted on.

Hickey may be punished here, but another one is going to be Ullstrom. He has played games in the NHL and now went to the KHL. I must admit it amused me a great deal to see the sudden outpouring of affection and love towards the newest 5th round draft pick, while an NHL caliber player like Ullstrom gets ONE vote to be added to the poll. I will get a good laugh if and when "VCR" gets added ahead of David Ullstrom, Kirill Petrov and others.

That said, this is for entertainment purposes, this poll is to be taken with a HUGE grain of salt. Remember that a lot of people voting have seen very few of these players actually play a great deal. So it's either ironic that the players that the fan base has seen most, they end up liking least (or ranking lowest), OR it's an indicator that there are a lot of dreamers who love to project. It is true that when someone ranks prospects in any sport or industry you must take potential into consideration but you must also factor in likelihood to reach that potential. Around here, the potential is valued FAR greater than the likelihood the player actually achieves or surpasses that potential. Hey optimism is a good thing I truly do hope that the islanders have 15 to 20 guys in the system that turn out to be better NHL players than Thomas Hickey and David Ullstrom (but I doubt it)!

I dont buy into Hickey as a "prospect"

First off, the guy was drafted back in 2007 (6 years ago!)
Secondly, we claimed him off of waivers last season.

At one time he may have been a Kings prospect, but for this team he's basically a young, mostly unproven waiver pick-up. Not exactly anyone's definition of a prospect, and if we're getting players that we consider "prospects" off the waiver wire, then something is really wrong here.

As for my vote, it's got to be Nilsson. He's probably the closest of those remaining to making a potential impact in our lineup.

The problem is:
1) There are very few people who see upside with Hickey. He appears to be a decent #6 or so, and maybe could develop into an above average #5, but as long as guys like Pokka, Mayfield, Pedan, Pelech, etc. have top-4 potential, chances are people are going to vote them in ahead of Hickey.

2) As far as VCR goes, I don't see a problem with having him voted in ahead of Petrov or even Ullstrom. Whether or not Ullstrom is still Isles property, the guy just left for the KHL at age 24. I see no problem with a fan writing him off at this point, or at least keeping expectations low. Same with Petrov. As a fan who has been holding out hope for quite some time, the whole "maybe he'll come over next year" is starting to get a little tedious. I thought about giving him an add-vote, just because his potential is bigger than everyone else who remains, but I'd honestly feel more comfortable with him lower in the top-20.

Either way, it's a testament to how deep our system is when guys like Petrov aren't even available options yet.

*EDIT: Oh, and add VCR ;)

Mayfield, Add Ullstrom again!

Edit: Agree with ITM. Shiny new toys get overvalued here.

Once Again, Anders Lee and Robbie Russo....
If Anders Lee.Improved UpoN His Quickness And Defense. Then Look OuT!!

MayfielD and Pedan Are Nipping At The Heels Of Lee As Far As This Contest Goes...

It Will Be Fun Watching All Three Of Them As Well As.our Other Top Prospects Play At Bridgeport....

who's Gonna Come Out On top Of ThIs contest Btwn Mayfield And Pedan And Who Will Actually Have The Better Season At Bridgeport?

so Many Top Prospects = So Much Excitement!!

Mayfield, Lee, and Nilsson are the next 3 in my opinion. Had a hard time deciding, but went with Mayfield. However if Nilsson stays healthy all year I expect the kind of play that will launch him into our top 5 next year.

Add Petrov.

Hickey

Here's something to think about in regards to ranking Hickey...

If you had to create an Islander team for the 2018-2019 season from just the players eligible for this prospect poll, where would Hickey rank?

When I cast my votes I'm doing so based in how I think the players would project out 5 years from now. Might Mayfield bust? Sure. Might deHaan never be fully healthy? Sure. However I'd rather roll the dice on guys like that then a guy like Hickey who we can see tops out as a 5/6/7 defenseman.
