2013 Draft Thread Part III - Squeezed Into The Top Ten

I have watched Monahan several times that last 2 seasons. I personally hope that NJ picks this kid up. I like the Toews comparsions. The kid has major offensive instincts. The guy put up major points on a very bad team and he missed time with a suspension (10 games). OHL hands suspensions like tick tacks.

anyone else see craig button's latest mock? video is on tsn.ca, he had devils taking zadorov lol

Do not want any defensemen in the first round. Unless it's the next Erik Karlsson then I do not want.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lou, and Conte and this crew pick one though.

I hope we take a Forward but if the top 7 are gone maybe we end up with a blue chip Dman

Everyone says we have deep prospects on D. Gelinas, Urbom, Merrill, Severson and Scarlett

Question though, for those in the know on these types of things, how many more years until we potentially see these guys in Newark? Obviously we have a log jam in Newark on D now, but are any of these guys ready to make the jump?

There's not even room for them right now as it is on the NHL Devils team. We have 6 guys signed for next year, and I don't think any of them is gonna be the 7th. We could bring one of them in though if we buyout Volchenkov or trade Tallinder.

I'd be fine with any of the forwards around our spot: Nichushkin, Shinkaruk, Monahan, and Lindholm are all fine choices.

I think it's unrealistic to think that a contending team try to insert more than one or two young dmen into the full time lineup in one season. Larsson was injected last year as an 18 year old (alng with Fayne getting full time duty), this year, with 8 D, it was tougher to juggle and there was simply no room for a guy like Urbom to step in.

Merrill will be given a look next year but again, with no room, I expect him to start in Albany and possibly get a call up. So, for the upcoming season, realistically Gelinas and possibly Urbom could split some time, the following year, Merrill, and the year after, Severson.

I don't see Scarlett as an NHL dman unless it's 4+ years down the road and if he can add some bulk, then it could be possible.

Adding a dman with a top 10 pick means the guy will likely need to be slotted in within 2 years and I just don't see the room unless one or potentially two of the young dmen above get dealt.

My top 10.. assuming there are no trades.

1. Colorado - D Seth Jones
2. Florida - C Nathan MacKinnon
3. Tampa Bay - LW Jonathan Drounin
4. Nashville - C Alesander Barkov
5. Carolina - C Elias Lindholm
6. Calgary - C Sean Monahan
7. Edmonton - C Valeri Niksushkin
8. Buffalo - LW Hunter Shinkaruk
9. New Jersey - Darnell Nurse or Nikita Zadorov
10. Dallas - Darnell Nurse, Rasmus Ristolanen or Nikita Zadorov

One of:

Nichushkin, Monahan, Lindholm, Shinkaruk. Whoemver falls to us.

If all the top tier forwards are gone. Doomsday(not really) scenario, we draft Domi.

we know there are a couple of teams that want D. id honestly be pretty surprised if we dont at least bag Shinkaruk

If we're drafting a defenseman, I do not want to someone who is simply "big and talented." He needs to have shown something, production wise, to warrant a high pick.

I don't know much about Zadorov, but he seems like the type of player who will bust.

I said the exact same thing a couple of weeks ago.

If size is his #1 asset, I hope we pass on the kid. It's easy to look like a beast on the ice when playing with kids your age who are all a half a foot to a foot shorter then you and outweight everyone by 30 pounds or so... That won't happen at the NHL level.

I'm sure he has a solid game or else he'd be in the same boat as Samuel Morin who's just as big and hasn't cracked the top #20 in terms of projected rankings. I just don't want us to pull a "Boris Valabik" and draft this beast of a man in the top #10, only to see him on waivers a couple of years down the road.

I want skill and smarts before size. With all the blueliners we've drafted over the past couple of years, most of them have size and skill, so going with a smaller d-man with some solid offensive upside (Pulock who has a bomb of a shot or Morrissey, who's a slick puck moving d-man) wouldn't be out of the question for me.

I rather draft Ryan Pulock over Zadorov and Nurse, but that's just me.

pretty good in his own end and can QB a PP.

Hrm, thought I was reading that Pulock was still a work in progress defensively.

I don't know much about Zadorov, but he seems like the type of player who will bust.

I wouldn't say bust as much as 'doesn't have a ton of fantasy hockey upside'. For being 6'5, I thought he was a fluid skater. Huge hitter/shutdown defender with some offensive upside. Kinda hoping the Flyers don't land him at #11.

Ah, **** me... with Lou in charge, we're definitly picking this kid... "Huge hitter and a shutdown defender with some offensive upside", sound like the perfect marriage for Lou.

FML

Carolina, Buffalo and Edmonton all are a strong possibility to take a defenseman, and I think they should. This means there will be a few good forwards at our spot, I personally hope we take Shinkaruk.

How I think/hope it could go:

COL: Jones
FLA: Drouin
TBL: Mackinnon
NSH: Barkov
CAR: Nurse
CGY: Monahan
EDM: Ristolainen
BUF: Zadorov
NJ: We can choose from Shinkaruk/Lindholm/Nichushkin

If the Hurricanes are going with a d-men, I really want Lou to give Rutherford a call so we can move up for one of Lindholm, Nichushkin or Monahan.

I have no idea what the price would be but we can send them a NHL ready prospect in Gélinas/Urbom, Tedenby and 2014 3rd? We don't have any use for the d-man we'll be moving since we have a glut of blueliners as it is, Tedenby isn't cracking our team... EVER and a top #90 pick in next years draft plus our 9th overall pick.

We'd be landing a legit bluechip prospect and we aren't gutting our prospect pool... just cleaning up the extra bodys we don't really need anymore.

Choice of Nichushkin, Sinkaruk AND Lindholm? where do I sign??

realistically, its not gonna happen

I want Shinkaruk more than Monahan, Nichushkin, and Lindholm anyways, and I think it's pretty realistic we get him.
