2012-2013 mvp

Howard is a good goalie. Nothing better. Nothing worse.

That he's ahead of Datsyuk, one of the best two-way centers in the history of the NHL, is absolutely ridiculous.

It's funny how much this fanbase disrespects the talent and skill of Datsyuk.

For years, they said he was useless unless he produced. Within months, he was getting recognition as the best defensive forward in hockey.

A large portion of the fanbase doesn't think he should have his number retired.

Take Datsyuk off this team and let Flip be your #2 center, and opposition shuts down Zetterberg and the Wings are toast.

It will be interesting if Pavel leaves next year, especially if Holland replaces him as well as he replaced Lidstrom and Stuart.

We already know how this team does when Pavel isn't at full speed.

Everyone loves and respects Datsyuk, stop making stuff up because everyone doesn't agree on every aspect about him.

I have to say that my MVP would be Pavel. As good as Jimmy has been his inconsistency has cost us games this season.
However, I think it has to be noticed that since DeKeyser joined the team they took points in 9 of 11 games

Night in, night out - Datsyuk.

Z was awesome for single game performances, or the odd string of games (our last stretch to the playoffs he was obviously all over the place, making things happen). He looked really average a lot of the time, though. Took some bad shots, and had bad defensive efforts. Had some uncharacteristic moments in which he would make bad, dumb turnovers.

Howard as well was awesome for large chunks of the year, but had the odd night where he could've done more. I'd go as far as saying he cost us points on his bad nights. Obviously he more than made up for it in the end, playing lights out nearly every game in April, and having a strong March as well.

Datsyuk is always carrying the load, though. He carries the puck up the ice often, puts pucks right on teammates blades, scores big goals, is a hound for the puck, does all the little defensive things that are needed to win games, etc.

Maybe people think Howard had a better season than Datsyuk. That's not disrespecting him, newsy. That's having an opinion contrary to yours, and it's perfectly legal and within the bounds of HFBoards rules.

Howard. He had 5 shutouts in a shortened season and could've had a few more with that ****** D in front of him. He went into beast mode 2nd half of the season when it mattered.

This sounds better than it actually is. They won 6 games and lost 5.

Bob's posts are a great read, but you hit the nail on the head here.

Howie edges out Datsyuk...both players put the team on their backs for multiple games at a time, and we definitely don't make the playoffs without either in the lineup...but Howie was flat-out dominant down the stretch.

LOL.
Making stuff up?

I don't care if people don't agree with me.

You may or may not be one of the WIngs fans who constantly underrate Datsyuk. Learning towards yes, because you think they were so close that you couldn't decide between them, when Datsyuk was better than Zetterberg in nearly every measurable stat around

Like 2010-11, when Datsyuk missed 26 games and Zetterberg was a top-ten scorer?

When Datsyuk was out from the 23rd to Feb 4, Detroit went 10-9. CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER!

Fans could find out as soon as next year. And even if Datsyuk does stick around, he's already on the decline.

Nobody said anything about being "legal"

I think that a lot of the fans voting for Howard are the Ken Holland "worshipppers" still all hot and bothered from justifying his contract.

Howie stole a couple games for us. But Howard isn't some Bobrovsky type.
But whatever.

Is Anti Niemi the Sharks MVP?
Is James Reimer the Leafs MVP?
Is Cory Schneider the Canucks MVP?
Is Craig Anderson the Senators' MVP?
Is Corey Crawford the Blackhawks MVP?
Is Tuuka Rask the Bruins MVP?

So we have three unbelievable performances to choose from and once again that becomes a pissing contest where people are told to "get a grip."

There's no bad choice.

That said, I'm on Team Howard. He played so great down the stretch it was hard to ignore his individual performance keeping his team in the game each night. That said, the team wouldn't make the playoffs without any of the key three players, which is why I don't think there's a bad choice here.

Datsyuk was the most entertaining of the season, I'll give him that. I'll even give it to him by a country mile. ;)

People have very good reason to go with Howard as MVP.

7th in GAA, 9th in SV%, 1st in Shut outs and 8th in wins with this defense?

And he was the best and most valuable player on the team by a country mile-- for the entire season.

Did Bench just say we have three unbelievable choices to choose from?

Did Datsyuk, Zetterberg or Howard -- any of the "Big 3" have "unbelievable" seasons?

HELL ****ING NO.

It's sort of a backhanded compliment when people say BS like "Pavel is the most entertaining player ... I'll give him that."

The haters on the main board use that tactic a lot. Usually, they call him flashy instead.

Never mind that Datsyuk just plain works harder than anyone else. Never mind that he won nearly twice as many faceoffs as anyone else... and that he won like 4 times as many defensive zone faceoffs as anyone else..

Meaning -- he's starting a ******** of shifts in the defensive zone.

Entertaining? Of course. But he's also the hardest working player on the ice. The most effective player on the ice. The best player on the ice in a starting number of games (our team and the opponents).

NHL jerseys sales for this past season had some interesting names and ranking:

1. Toews
2. Datsyuk
3. Crosby
4. Nash
5. Kane

Is it ok if people have a different opinion than you? You say it's ok, but then act like it's not.

Howard has a very legit case, and hell, I'm with you on thinking Datsyuk is the teams MVP.

Pav, Howard, and Z all had stretches throughout the season where they really carried the load. To finish the season, all 3 of them carried the load.

What separates Datsyuk though IMO is that when he's "off" of his game for a stretch, he still has such a huge impact in terms of all of the little things he does. When his offensive game goes quiet he still cancels out opposing lines. He simply doesn't get scored on often. Only a handful of centers league wide had a better GA/60 this season. And none of them had a quality of competition as high as Datsyuk's.
Then you have all the little things: like being the guy who takes important faceoffs, the guy who Babcock throws bottom 6 wingers with to help protect and distribute lineup balance, and the player who other teams' plan around (often using their top defenceman against).

So in that sense Datsyuk is the pretty clear MVP IMO.

Howard maybe had the best season considering expectations and his rough start to the season...
And Z is still such a huge value and a great 1B forward. And when it comes to stepping up ones game when we most need it, Z is seemingly always there.

But night in and night out, Datsyuk is the player that has the biggest impact on the game and would be the most difficult to replace.

RWN/fading capt/Bob,

I'm with you on Dats,

but as to your laughing list of goalies as MVPs - I am nearly certain that Sharks fans will tell you Niemi was their MVP this year.

other than Crawford those examples aren't nearly as laughable as you think

I actually went and asked the Sharks forum who they think the teams MVP this season was to prove a point:

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1414695&page=17

the two answers I got:

Niemi by far.

Couture second.

niemi and it's not even close

i feel like that stretch in february/march when the team was like worst-team-in-the-league bad, he was the only reason we were getting some loser points and not falling out of playoff contention... and many games in which we get the 2 points required Nemo making some amazing highlight reel saves

If Howard is team MVP because if he is replaced with Gus Wings are definitely lottery team
then most of other teams' MVPs are goalies too.

I vote for Dan Cleary. He's big, he's real good on the puck. He's a realgud player.

(Jimmy Howard pulled this team even when everyone else took a nap. If not for Howard playing out of his mind there would be no playoffs.)

Wow. Interesting that Datsyuk is #2.

Last 5-10 games Howard was great, but earlier this season he was very inconsistent.

I would go
1. D
2. Z
3. Howard

removing datsyuk, zetterberg or howard would mean missing the playoffs. i think it's between datsyuk and howard, but i think howard is easier to replace than datsyuk.

i think it is reasonably feasible to trade for an adequate goalie, but i think it's much less likely to get a replacement for datsyuk. his ability to drive possession is very very important.

zetterberg would be the focus of every team, would have a bigger defensive role. filppula had a poor season. DRW would be on defense more and have more defensive zone faceoffs.
