I am just that naive to the subject when asking this, but to all of the Canadians on the board, are there major interest in other sports within the country?

Here in the US almost all major cities have year round sports to keep them going. Although hockey does go for a good part of the year, what is it for you guys when it’s over? Is there anything?

Just seems like you have a very large group of people who put all of their fandom into one thing. Shit like this isn’t surprising. Not saying it’s right but imagine a game 7 happening in Toronto and they lost. They may burn the city to the ground.

Well since the Grizzlies left, Vancouver only has the Canucks, and I guess an MLS team if you want count that.

Toronto has the Jay's and Raps, and while they are popular, they are still secondary to the Leafs.

Baseball or NBA in Van would be great, and every now and then there's a tease but another seems to materialize.

It’s weird to me to see people pretending Vancouver is some kind of particularly noteworthy place for sports riots. Other cities have literal deaths due to sports related riots. Not for one second excusing what happened here. But people wanting to brand Vancouverites or Canucks fans for this foolishness probably didn’t need the riot to have that dislike. They’re just looking for an excuse.

I remember this day a very dark moment as a fan, we were all watching the game at home with friends then during the post game on cbc the story starts developing about it I’m probably a 15 minute drive away from the arena and you could hear sirens go by and helicopters circling around. I never understood it it’s such a stupid thing to riot over a f***ing hockey game, I was crushed my team lost but what happened after was just like hitting someone while they’re down. A total black eye on the fan base. What sucks is we all get bunched together because of this. I hope the businesses and people’s vehicles that were burnt to a crisp received good compensation.

Anyway how does one watch this without a subscription? Feel free to dm a friendly link if you know what I mean. ;)

I saw a part of it earlier, and noticed one of my friends was interviewed and a part of it, pretty cool.

No he wasn't one of the rioters, he was one of the good Samaritans that saved one of the men from getting beaten more and pulled away from the crowd. Even in an ocean of stupidity, there is still some good out there

Vancouver is the most famous for rioting. 1994 and 2011 were the big ones after game 7 of the finals.

I recall some rioting in 1993 in Montreal but not the same scale.

It doesn't really have much to do with hockey Fandom. It's idiots being idiots in a large gathering.

Probably a stupid question but was the riot in 2011 or 1994 worse?
It's hard to compare. Both were bad. The 2011 one had way more cameras so it may seem more intense in comparison

In 1994, you were limited to news cameras pretty much. I remember John shorthouse used to be a reporter back then and he started struggling with his live report as the riot police had just realsed some gas.

On one hand it seems like this happened about 100 years ago but at times it seems like it just happened. My memories from that night are still pretty vivid.

- a buddy who is a casual Bruins fan called me with about 5 minutes left in the 3rd period of Game 7 to congratulate me and I told him to f off and not jinx it.
Once the CBC ended their coverage I called him back and he suggested going downtown just to see what was happening. I did think about it but finally decided just to stay home and watch TSN and Sportsnet at 11 pm for the post game interviews. It was about 20 minutes later that another friend called me and let me know that downtown Vancouver had become a warzone. :amazed:

- at the time I was bartending at a place called The Ice Bar in Vancouver ( Kingsway and 12th ) and there was a regular there that was an OK guy but was tight as hell with his money and was always asking for free beers. My bartending rule was that I never gave anything to customers that would ask for free stuff but if you were polite and a half decent tipper I would occasionally give you a drink on the house. Anyway - this guy wore the same well worn army jacket every day of the year regardless of how cold or hot it was. So a few days later he came in wearing this brand new Roots jacket - it was a letterman style jacket with patches of the Original 6 NHL teams on the arms. It was a very nice looking jacket and cost about $450. It used to be on display in the window of the main Roots Vancouver store on Robson Street and that store was one of the downtown stores that was heavily looted that night so I knew damn well where that jacket came from. So of course I asked him when he got it and how much it cost and he told me some BS story about how his GF just bought it for him as a birthday gift and that he had no idea how much it cost. I knew he was full of sh*t and I'm pretty sure that he knew that I knew he was full of sh*t.
