2010s is better at every position
2020s are better down the middle.

Malkin was surprisingly underwhelming in terms of 2010s production, especially after the mini lockout. Just 1 top 5 hart finish in the 2010s, and no other finishes in the top 10

Kopitar (2 top 5s), Malkin (1 win, 1 top 10) and Tavares (2 top 5s) have just 5 top 5 hart finishes between them from 2010-2019.

Even crosby has "just" the 1 hart, and 6 top 5s.

Overall: 2 wins, 10 top 5s, 1 top 10, and that's for a full decade

In the 2020s the group has: 4 wins, 8 top 5s, 2 top 10s, and that's in just 5 years

Team 2010s wins this.

Keith and Kovalchuk are missing from the 2010s roster, and Ovechkin and Malkin have proven to have no chemistry together in the past, so I would definitely split them up. Despite these limitations, I'd still take Team 2010s.

I would add Kaprizov to the 2020s roster, but they still fall short in this matchup.

It doesn’t say anywhere that we get a specific version of each player, so in my mind this has every player in their prime

2020s should end up being better it is just that they got so much less time/legacy/reputation right now and some of the guys havent "peaked"

Yep it’s pretty close as it is. McDavid/Matthews isn’t such a bad matchup against Crosby and Malkin especially since this board still generally underrates the two way play of Matthews and MacKinnon absolutely slaughters Tavares and Barkov matches really well with Kopitar. Beyond that the wings and defense are close, the goaltending is close but having Keith on team 2010s puts them over the top but it’s by no means a landslide. I would guess team 2020 probably emerges before the decade is over.

This is mostly due to the health of these players spanning 5 and 10 year periods which wouldn’t matter in a 7 game series.

Much rather have peak Toews than Tavares.

Also agree with those saying 2020 will eventually be better. Prime Bedard will likely factor in within the next 5 years among others.

Especially in a 7 game series in a best on best situation like this. No brainer.

CMD is no slouch but 2010s has more generational talent than 2020s.

2010s also has more dimensions to their play than 2020s with some of the last power forwards in the game. 2020s is a lot of finesse and sniping. 2010s also has this, but also has a bunch of physicality as well. Lots of 2010s guys can tweak their game to be more physical or finesse. 2010s are also all bigger and heavier on average, so in a playoff format, that's to their advantage as well. Then you have centres that can add sandpaper to their finesse game if required. 2020s guys are who they are.

Benn and Chara in their prime rag dolls the hell out of the 2020s crew and 2020s will have no answer for it. Tkachuk is perhaps the best for the 2020 crew and he's in the same tier as Perry and Marchand. Ovi still sits alone in a group by himself in these two pairs. 2020 would be badly dominated in the physicality game.

2010s reserve group is still a terrifying group for players not included (ie: Keith, Toews, Kipper etc.). Once compiled, I bet that group looks like an all star team roster as well.

Agreed that 2020s haven't peaked.

I believe every game would be interesting, but I think 2010s would win the majority of all of the games played.

2010s.

The only advantage team 2020s has is in their forward core. Goaltending and defense are overwhelmingly in 2010's favor

It says peak though. Malkin’s ‘12 is one of the best post-lockout seasons. He was also only not factoring in the Hart due to injuries.

Still I agree overall, mainly because MacKinnon is a lot better than Tavares.

defense for sure for 2010s and i think it will remain that way even by the end but it will probably be a lot closer with guys panning out and new guys (ASP and Seider baby lol) hitting their strides

goaltending though i dunno if it is an advantage for 2010s i am very impressed with both Vasi and Shesterkin

To be honest, I think this is closer than some are making it out to be. There was a lot of “meh” in the 2010s in terms of star scoring power and I don’t believe we should be including years outside of the time frame so you’re not getting peak Ovechkin. If anything the 2020 team is probably better offensively, but the 2010 team is better defensively and has more physical edge that might wear 2020 down.

If we look at the forwards,

McDavid ‘21/‘23 is slightly better than peak per game Crosby (‘11), and even better than full season peak Crosby (‘14)

Malkin ‘12 is similar to MacKinnon ‘24

Matthews ‘22/‘24 is similar in scoring to ‘12 Stamkos but a better all around player

Kucherov ‘24 is better than Kane ‘16

Draisaitl ‘23 is decently better than Ovechkin ‘15
(I’m not including 19-20 since I consider that 2010s)

Tkachuk ‘23 is pretty similar to Marchand ‘19

Pastrnak ‘23 is probably better than Perry ‘11

Tavares ‘15 was better than Hughes ‘23, but not by a huge amount

Panarin ‘24 was probably better offensively than Giroux ‘12/‘18 though probably a push as overall players

Barkov ‘22 and Kopitar ‘14/‘18 are pretty similar

Benn ‘15 was probably better than Rantanen ‘23 but again not by a huge amount

Bergeron ‘14 was better than Point ‘23 imo due to matchup abilities but they’re both great.

Peak you still have 3 hart winners down the middle for 2020s.

I'd rank it in terms of peak

McDavid
Crosby's (I'd argue his statistical peak may have been in the 2000s)
Mackinnon
Malkin
Matthews
Barkov
Kopitar
Tavares

I like both 2020s goalies (Shesterkin especially) but I'd say Lundqvist is equal to those 2 at least and Price at his peak is a tier higher.

Also important to consider Crosby, Malkin, and Ovi all had their arguable peaks in the 2000s, not 2010s.

All 3 had their career highs in points in the late 2000s.

Malkin's best season was 2011-12. There's no argument otherwise.

Crosby's best play was 2010-2013. I would say 2013-14 was his best full season, but 2006-07 and 2009-10 aren't far off.

Malkin had his career high in points and won the Conn Smythe in 2008-09
