Interesting article in LaPresse+ on the Roy trade:

I mean, we all know there was some problems between Roy and Tremblay... but I don't remember reading such eloquent quotes about it.

Basically, Tremblay came into the locker room, with no previous coaching experience, and tried to be the alpha male. Roy just laughed at it and from there on, it was clear that it wouldn't work out between these two guys.

I still get upset when I think about it...ugh. Tremblay is such *********

On the top of that, Tremblay is one of the main reason that we shipped Pierre Turgeon away
We were quite strong with Turgeon, Damphousse, Recchi, Koivu :(

Roy was at least partially responsible for this whole mess. Tremblay clearly didn't know what he was doing either... It's a terrible combination.

Anyways, a strong GM would've stepped in and fixed this situation. But Houle was in over his head. Nobody was steering the ship and that's why things ended the way they did. But I find it very hard to forgive Roy for this whole mess. He should've handled things much differently. I remember this night pretty well. Sitting around watching the game with the guys and it just got uglier and uglier... then absolute shock when we found out that Roy demanded the trade. Again, a seasoned GM would've patched things up but... Ronald Corey probably didn't help much either.

One of Forsberg or Sakic should have been part of that trade...instead we got a bunch of rejects.

I remember watching this game and thinking at the moment that Roy's reaction was completely justified. Tremblay was a buffoon and deserved this outcome. I kept thinking, ok Roy is getting pulled, but Tremblay had made his decision to humiliate him. It has to be the most memorable moment in recent Habs history. The image of seeing him walk to Ronald Corey and Tremblay glancing over is imprinted in my mind forever. And thus began the dark days of habs history.

I still remember trying to convince myself that one of this middling prospects would turn into something.

Darkest day.

At the time I felt the same way. But when he was still demanding a trade days later...

Um what? The Habs had zero leverage and Roy was not worth either of those guys straight up in the best of circumstances. Goalies are undervalued in trades as a general rule.

In his book written by his father, Patrick said he had regrets about how it happened but they clearly couldn't work together.

The one to blame is really Houle.

So then tell Quebec to go fly a kite. I totally agree that we should've done much better than we did. We didn't even get a first out of it. We were robbed blind.

Quebec was a goalie away from a cup, no way they couldn't have given us more. We should've looked elsewhere if they weren't willing to pony up. Just one more sad chapter in this whole mess.

I could have sworn that Patrick apologized in a meeting soon after and didn't want to be traded but the brass had already made up their minds...not sure where I read that once upon a time.

I don't think so. That's not the way I remember it anyway.

Forsberg was breaking out, this was his 2nd season. It's not like he had achieved superstar status unlike Roy.

btw this article talks about the trade a bit more:

Sounds like Savard would have at least gotten us Nolan

i hate when Roy's leaving even gets mentioned. Truly, the worst day in the history of the franchise. It started a 15 + year run of mediocrity that we have just over the last few seasons gotten out of with the coming of age of another goalie. It is still painful despite 20 years having passed

the fact that we had an inept GM really, really hurt - but I don't blame him. He was simply in over his head and it showed over the next several years with his trading quality players for nothing and terrible drafting (man, look at those first rounders and my statement is despite Andre Markov as a 6th rounder). For Houle, I blame Corey and Molson. They ignored the team, got very cheap on resigning players and did hired a beer salesman who had no front office experience to run the greatest NHL franchise. Their moves are reminiscent of Harrold Ballard.

But the Roy stuff is all on Tremblay. He could not take it that his former rookie roommate was now all hot stuff. He had to cut him down to size. He basically threw our superstar away to assert his authority. I am still so upset with what he caused the Habs to become that I refuse to watch any show that he is on. Quite frankly, I don't see how anyone who is a Habs fan can watch the guy that is one of the most responsible for the poor showing over the last 20 years.

I think People are too harsh with Tremblay. Sure he was a terrible coach, but he wasn't supposed to be there. The guy is bleeding Bleu-Blanc-Rouge, more than any other player I can think of. For such a dedicated Habs, it was impossible to refuse the mission. He did his best with the knowledge he had and with his huge shortcomings.

I remember Lemaire telling reporters that even after a few years as a Minny ass-coach, Tremblay was still checking the newspapers everyday to see how the Habs were doing.

Houle and Tremblay were both amazing dedicated Habs that would have done anything for the team. They just didn't have what it takes to do the job. They shouldn't have been hired in the first place, without any hiring process by Corey. They were greatly incompetents, that's it. But they should never been called "buffon" or "clown" or anything.

They failed BIG TIME as coach and GM, but they did won many Stanley Cups as players, playing injured against goons in the '70s, giving all they got at all time. They deserve respect, not being called names.

I just read some pages of his book again. I didn't remember Savard was about to trade Roy to the Avalanche for Owen Nolan, just before Savard was fired in October 95.

Scotty Bowman was PO'd when he heard the Nords/Avs got Roy... he then hit the roof when he heard Keane was an add-on.

"The worst part was why did they have to add Keane as well? Inexperience showed on Montreal part, they should have stayed patient."
