Proposal: 1st OA for 2nd OA

It would have to be more than what San Jose is offering and based on the assumption San Jose and Chicago want whoever the Isles are taking at 1.
my guess is if the isles decide against taking Schaefer number one their preference would be the San Jose spot so they can still have their choice of center prospect.

If SJ really wants Schaeffer and Chicago really wants Misa then Islanders could in theory get both to pony up something. From those teams perspectives they wouldn't have to pony up as much as if they were the only team trying to trade up

Yeah, which is why if they're trading out of the first overall pick, it's gotta be swapping with SJ at second. And then it's finding that sweet spot where the Sharks are comfortable in making the trade and it's enough for the Isles to go from Schaefer to Misa. Which is why the Isles getting the Dallas first or #33 this year and SJ's 2nd next is probably the deal, should the Isles want it.

It could work like that. Every team gets their guy. Isles let’s say want hagens, sharks Schaefer, hawks Misa. Isles get some extra picks/pospects.

Not a normal thing you see at the draft though.

Oh I know. Ideally the league is hoping the whole Hagens to the Isles thing is happening so they can cash in but that’s besides the point. I think more so Chicago might want to move up with the extra draft capital they have over San Jose. Seems like GMMG is happier just picking whoever’s available between Misa/Schaefer/Hagens and letting them develop.

I think the Sharks would accept this to ensure Schaefer for themselves.
I don’t. Grier said after the lottery, “We aren’t at the point we are going to draft for need.” Becher (Sharks President) said, “It’s perfectly plausible that who we wanted a 1 will be available at 2.” I suspect they are content to stay at 2 and draft either Schaefer or Misa. I wouldn’t pay this much to move up 1 spot and I hope the Sharks management agrees.

They aren’t but if the opportunity to get Schaefer or whoever they’d prefer at one is a winger and a second, they can eat that cost.

I most certainly don't. Chernyshov is not on the table to move from 2 to 1, especially when we're also moving a 2nd and taking that awful Duclair contract. Chernyshov should have gone ~15th overall last year.

Some other prospect, sure. Not Chernyshov.

Agree with this. DAL 1st plus Musty, Bystedt or Halts is something SJ can do. Chernyshov isn’t getting moved.

If one believes that Schaefer is the real deal, they’re not letting a winger prospect be what stops them from making a deal for a 1D.

Exactly. From everything the Sharks have said so far, there is nothing that would even remotely suggest that they'd pony up a package to move up 1 spot. At this point I'm hoping they are wanting Misa and happy to take Schaefer is Misa goes 1. Then take some of the pieces people are haggling over and move some of them for a RHD.

One certainly can if that winger prospect is elite, the #2 pick is a future 1C, you're also giving up a 2nd rounder, and you're taking back three years of Duclair (probably worth a 2nd as well) on top of that.

I'm obviously a believer in Schaefer and I've advocated for trading up more than anyone else. But it's not worth it if the cost includes Chernyshov. I'm a believer in him and Misa too.

but, I'd certainly consider moving him in a deal for Willander. If necessary.

That’s fair enough but I think this is the sort of cost we’re looking at to ensure Schaefer rather than leave it to whatever the Isles decide to do with it.

They could but I think it is being overestimated what both teams would "pony up. "

The only scenario I could see something substantial being offered is from Chicago wanting to leapfrog San Jose for Schaefer but do they even want to?

Okay, that's silly.

Basically the way this works is the Islanders play Chicago and SJ against each other. If SJ is just as happy with Misa or Schaefer, the deal can be with Chicago. As long as Chicago values Misa or Schaefer ahead of Hagens, they have incentive to make the deal.

After a day talking to people who have a lot of overlap in the local hockey community (I coach youth lacrosse- there's a lot of overlap) I didn't realize how much the sentiment is for drafting Hagens. Like, among the hardest of hardcore hockey people who are also the hardest or hardcore Islanders fans, it's a given *for them* that there's only one thing NYI can do.

Given the incentives, there's got to be a reasonable way to handle this where NYI can get Hagens + if that's the decision NYI make.

If, otoh, there's Chicago and SJ really don't care and are happy with whoever they get? Well, then there won't be any movement.
Isles fans putting sentimentalism over good judgement? I don't know, doesn't sound like the fanbase I know and love :sarcasm:

Chicago might want Misa and if Islander take Schaeffer then SJ takes Misa, Chicago is left out
