#1OA Juraj Slafkovsky - Huge Disappointment

Must be great to be the league's player factory for competitive teams while also being the joke for your failed rebuild.
at least we produced productive players for other teams lol. Yall cant claim to produce your own or have traded them haha. We can be friends though because we can both agree the Bruins screwed our franchises for years.....

He was 19 years old for most of last season until March. It's listed as his 19 year old season on hockey reference and quanthockey.

If we're gonna do that then a few of the players ahead of him on that list would be in their 20 year old season.
I just don't think you'd say he that got drafted in his "17 year old" season. I'm more associating it with +/- draft year timelines, when fair enough, there is more nuance there.

In Slaf's case, since his birthday occurs during that season of play, perhaps that's a point in my favour though ;)

Yeah you get drafted in your 17 year old season and then his rookie year was his 18 year old season. Same for everyone except late bday players.

Slaf is still 20. He was born in 2004 like Carlsson and Fantilli. He was never going to be a superstar, but he can become a good 70 pt player who hopefully grows into his physical frame and learns to use that to his advantage.

The expectations for the 22' draft were among the lowest ever

I mean look at his stats prior to being drafted. Probably the worse ever for a 1st overall. He is trending just as expected. Slaf himself is not a disappointment. The fact he was drafted 1st however, that's another story.
Yeah i hear stunted/stalled development. The guy had 10 points in 31 games during his draft year. It is what it is.

That said i still think he’ll be a legitimate first liner in 2-3 seasons. He does have potential

Id say its an overstatement at this point. He showed last year that he can do it and just needed more consistency, the hope was that this season he'd take the step and hasnt, but hes still young. Lafreniere had 52 points over his first two seasons, Slaf had 50 just last year. Third season is too early to say.

Theres definitely an expectation that first overalls be super stars but that cant be the expectation. Out of the last 8 first overall picks, how many would even be first overall on a redraft? Jack Hughes, then the most recent two (who have tiny sample sizes to truly know on a redraft)? 4 are absolutely not going first and theres an argument against Power being taken over Luke Hughes or Kent Johnson.

Overall hes shown potential but hasnt broken through, still has time to prove himself. At this point in Nate Mackinnon's career we had bust threads. So I'd say hes below average for a first overall but not a clear bust or huge disappointment just yet.

For some context of maybe the problem might be US with what we expect from them 1st overall pick

the last 5

Alexis Lafreniere
Owen Power
Juraj Slafkovsky
Connor Bedard
Mack Celebrini

Celbrini has more or less stepped right in and hit his spot--but if he has a sophmore stepback next year? Watch out.
Power is a D man so he has little more wiggle room
Beddard has been good but not great and both fans and media are now questioning whether he was worth the first overall pick ignoring the fact only 7 players from his draft year have played in the nhl yet
Alex L? Rangers have either love him or hate him--but no many would take him 1st overall.

The draft is a gamble and sometimes not all 1st overall picks are a McDAvid or Matthews

I don't think I ever heard or read that.

it is on the first page... a few other talking heads are suggesting he plays a small game

It's always longer for big players, he is a disapointment yes but he wasn't drafted to be productive right away, the finish product will be really interesting. He has powerforward tools and good hands, he just need to figure out what player he will be. When he is too fancy it doesn't work, he needs to keep his feet moving, use his body to create separation and finish his checks. He is still 20 years old, sometimes players turns a corner at 20 sometimes at 25 years old

Anyone saying he wasn't as good as his hot streak showed last year was tarred and feathered by Habs fans on here.
He was very good last year, the "hot streak" towards the end of the year was just his luck turning around (and grown confidence of course) as despite playing well he couldn't get any scoring going at the start of the year. Habs fans were deservedly excited about Slaf.

Somehow this year though it kind of seems his mind is not quite there, I'm not sure what it is but his playing is more timid and perimeter, and his passing (which was just brilliant last year) is now killing more plays than creating them.
