They just showed some stats that at this point he's pretty much at the same point total as Jack Hughes, so I guess we'll know next season if he can take off, or if it's still "well, let's hope he can get 20 goals a year"

I know he wasn't 1st overall, but an example is a guy like Adrian Kempe that took 6 years from draft until he broke out.
Going back other big forwards like Nate Horton took some time.

Wright wasn't picked #1OA tho, the expectations are vastly different. Besides, Slafkovsky is regressing whereas Wright is trending in the right direction. Two very different trajectories.
Wright isn't anywhere near good enough to call Slaf a mistake, and Wright was up there and many people expected him to go 1OA, so it's fair to judge both on equal grounds.

It was a horrible year to land the 1OA pick, it's not Slaf, Wright, Cooley or the Habs fault.

So far none of the top picks really distiguished themselves enough from the others to have that discussion imo.

Let’s see, a big kid that has a decent year and follows it up with a dip in production. Odd, never saw that before in hockey history. He should have progressed to a 80+ point player with no bumps in the road, just pure straight line trajectory to the top of the point charts. Habs should see if they could get a 2nd round pick for him but it seems he’s already busted so I guess they’re stuck with him. Some of the takes in these threads makes me wonder if some posters just started watching games or just troll for shits and giggles knowing full well that it’s way too early to determine what any of these young players will turn out to be. He’s 20 for f*** sakes

Jack Hughes has shown huge flashes of skating, puck handling, speed, agility, shiftiness and vision at times since his rookie year, so the breakout signs were definitely there. I’m not sure what Slav has shown, apart from being 6’3.

next season will be crucial to accessing who he’ll be for the rest of his career. At the moment I see him as a 70 point ceiling and 60 point season average.

He showed more flashes, particularly in the 2nd half of last season, which is why he got his contract.

This year him showing the flashes is much smaller.

Hughes' flashes are also much different from what Slaf's flashes are.

Slaf will use his man body and hold people off and look really.strong for a shift, or two and then you swear a player similar size to Caufield can easily outmuscle him for the rest of the game.

Even if Slaf hits, he's not going to put up your typical 1st overall numbers. If he hits he's probably a 30-35 goal scorer at 60-70 points who's an absolute pain to handle down low most nights.

Eh, don’t love that comparison though because everyone knew Hughes had the skill, it was just about finding a way to make it work at the NHL level with his size.

Slaf has the physical tools, it’s just not clear if he thinks the game at a high enough level to utilize his size and skill.

His 19 year old season is the 17th highest production among active players.. which may not seem like much, but all the names ahead of him range from HHOF to first line players..
Wouldn't it be accurate/factually correct to refer to last year as his 20 year old season and this his 21 year old season? I'm sure it matters when it comes to making the comparisons you are suggesting.

He was 19 years old for most of last season until March. It's listed as his 19 year old season on hockey reference and quanthockey.

If we're gonna do that then a few of the players ahead of him on that list would be in their 20 year old season.
