True, they both missed games as well. Yzerman played 58 and Lindros 65.

Lemieux only played 22 which is why I felt it was more likely he would not be able to play.

Francis and Brind'Amour would be my replacements for them if they aren't good to play at that point in the season.

Neely would be on my team as well, if health permitted.

I think lemieux would suck it up and play regardless... the year he played 60 games and got 160 points he couldnt even tie his own skates due to pain

Russia could have looked something like this:

Khabibulin
Trefilov
Shtalenkov

Konstantinov-Malakhov
Zubov-Gusarov
Zhitnik-Yushkevich
D.Mironov-Kravchuk

Bure-Fedorov-Mogilny
Kamensky-Larionov-Kovalenko
Nikolishin-Zhamnov-Korolev
S.Kozlov-Yashin-Kovalev

Fetisov probably would have been left off the team since in 1994 it was thought that his career was in a terminal decline. A trade to Detroit rejuvenated his career for a few more years.

I would also leave out Makarov since he was not effective anymore in 1994.

Runner ups in defense would be Kasparaitis and Karpovtsev, and in forwards Nemchinov, Titov and Berezin.

EDIT: Wonder how effective Bykov and Khomutov would have been in 1994. A year earlier they were the difference makers when Russia won the WC Gold in Germany. But in the 1995 WC's they were not that good anymore.

My team Canada 1994:

Injured: Lemieux, Neely

Shanahan Gretzky Yzerman
Sakic Messier Lindros
Damphousse Gilmour Fleury
Robitaille Oates Recchi
Roberts

Bourque MacInnis
Stevens Coffey
Desjardins Murphy
Tinordi

Roy
Belfour

How about this Team Sweden?

Forwards
1.
Renberg – Sundin – Loob
2. Garpenlöv – Forsberg – Sandström
3. M Andersson – Steen – Mats Näslund
4. Bergqvist – Nylander – Dahlén
5: Carnbäck – Juhlin
Defensemen
1.
Lidström – C Johansson
2. Olausson – U Samuelsson
3. Albelin – K Samuelsson
4. T Jonsson – K Jönsson/Popovic
Goaltenders
1:
Söderström
2. Salo
3. Hedberg

I am still fascinated how much hype it was around this Olympic gold in Sweden considering how weak several of the teams were. The Olympics in 92 seems to have been much stronger, even if the Swedish team was slightly weaker. Just look at the Russian team in 92 and compare it to the 94 team.

Alright, edited my team. This is what I would have liked to see, personally. Final answer - lock it in:

Sakic-Lemieux-Neely
Robitaille-Gretzky-Yzerman
Shanahan-Oates-Lindros
Roberts-Messier-Fleury
Gilmour

Bourque-Coffey
Stevens-MacInnis
Blake-Murphy
Niedermayer

Roy
Joseph
Belfour

I'm glad you moved Roberts from the 1st line to the 4th- but he still doesn't belong on this team at all.

My team Canada 1994:

Robitaille Oates Recchi

Bourque MacInnis
Stevens Coffey
Desjardins Murphy
Tinordi

Roy
Belfour

Blake should make the defense ahead of likes of Tinordi. I would have also taken Kariya to the team even if he was not in the NHL yet.

And those lines and defensive pairings are pretty bad.

Canada was very stacked on center in the early 1990s (even without Lemieux) and thus I would include 5-6 centers to this team, and put some of them to wing.

Shanahan - Gretzky - Nolan
Yzerman - Messier - Fleury
Kariya - Lindros - Recchi
Sakic - Gilmour - Linden
Clark

Bourque - Blake
Coffey - Murphy
Stevens - MacInnis
Desjardins

Roy
Joseph
McLean

It's not too often that you are told that line pairings or defensive pairing are bad, only to see the other person put out something this bad. Blake was not very good defensively at this point, which is why I cut him after some thought, and yet you put him on the top pairing. the At least he had international experience. You have a defensive trainwreck in Coffey and Murphy. You put the two worst skating defencemen on the same pairing in MacInnis an Stevens. Tinordi was picked as a role player to basically just kill penalties from the seventh spot, possibly not the optimal pick but Canada lacked depth (and Duchesne was hurt).

McLean has no place on the team, so I have to assume that with his inclusion (and Linden's) you are a Vancouver fan. If not then it's just mystifying, as Belfour was clearly better having just won his second Vezina and having a fair amount of experience with the Canadian national team.

Nolan only played six games that year, yet you put him on the first line. Gretzky is left without a defensive conscience and Yzerman is playing out of position (when he played wing it was right wing) on the second line. Recchi and Lindros is a good pairing and Kariya is a defensible pick, but even with his strong performance in the 1994 Olympics I am not certain. Linden was a strange fit for the larger ice and wasn't having a great year at the time, but Clark was worse in that regard and I'm somewhat shocked to see him there over a winger like Robitaille who actually played well at the 1994 World Championship or even some extra centres like Francis or Oates. All that said it's still a team more than good enough to win.

Team USA

Stevens - Roenick - Hull
Mullen - Modano - Amonte
Granato - Lafontaine - Young
Weight - Otto - Tkachuk

Chelios - Suter
Housley - K. Hatcher
Iafrate - Norton

HM: Shawn Chambers, Derian Hatcher

Richter
Barrasso
Vanbiesbrouck

HM: John Casey

Huge omission on that blueline.

Russia would have been sick with Bure, Mogilny, Fedorov, Kovalev, Zhamnov, Larionov, Fetisov, Yashin. All those forwards save Kovalev were within 4 points of ppg! And we all know that several of them were much higher.

Yeah and don’t forget their world class defence:

Malakhov, Konstantinov, Zubov, Mironov as a top 4. On big ice they just might win the gold, Fedorov or Zubov/Bure as MVP.

He was still in school during that year. wouldn't have made it, Bret Hull will be in for Canada I think at that time he was still in good terms with Canada?

Hull was locked in for USA, at least at IIHF events, following the 1986 world championship. After USA took him that's where he wanted to be anyway.

There was also young Pavol Demitra in AHL. He could have his place. And of course, Anton Stastny who was punished for his attack to referee and could be there.

Hold on a second, if Tikhonov was named the coach are all those talented Russians show up? Some of them would have just not wanted to deal with that again

Kasparaitis is Lithuanian.

Edit: Disregard. Forgot Kasparaitis still played for Russia in 98 and 2002.
