Vesey and Connor Sheary are two hallmarks of the drought for me. Just worthless space-eaters when they were on the ice. And we thought these guys were going to be difference makers. Guess they are, just not for us.
Sheary and Vesey are still terrible players. Sheary will likely be dealt this year, and vesey is at this point a 4th line/13th forward type

Our franchise is a freaking embarrassment. Bridge Sam Reinhart then trade him for peanuts but sign Tage Thompson and Cozens to long term deals...

Thompson had a 47 47 season after being signed and Cozens 30 30....if anything it shows that the Sabres actually learned to sign core players to long term deals instead of messing around with bridge deals and watching them leave.

Vesey never played a game for Buffalo, despite acquiring his rights.
But, at one point in time, Eichel, Reinhart, ROR, Kane, Okposo, Mittlestadt, Ullmark were on the roster together in 17/18 season.

All about the mix and the culture. When you burn it to the ground, it's not easy to build it back up.

You can probably do this with a lot of teams
agreed. my rough count is 18 guys that played for the hurricanes, and played at least one game in the playoffs this year for another team.

Eetu Loustarinen
Stephen Lorentz
Morgan Geekie
Patrick Brown
Max Domi
Joel Edmundson
Calvin de Haan
Vinnie Trocheck
Max Pacioretty
TVR
Nino Neiderfire
Ian Cole
Phil di Guiseppe
Elias Lindholm
Warren Foegele
Derek Ryan
Noah Hanifin
Nic Roy

if you add guys that never played for the canes, but the canes had them at some point, then plus 4:
Adam Fox
Gustav Forsling
Evgenii Dadonov
Caleb Jones

Then there were 4 more guys that played for the canes, played elsewhere for a playoff team this year, but didn't draw in in the playoffs:
Hadyn Fleury
Julien Gauthier
Ethan Bear
Jani Hakanpaa

tl;dr - lots of guys move on. lots of teams make the playoffs. what matters is how you replace them when they go.

I mean they missed the playoffs a ton, significantly underperforming when they did make it because of terrible player usage. I thought the point of the thread was to highlight teams that were less than the sum of their parts?

You could build a dominant cup contending roster with Calgary castaways.
Calfalo? Bufgary? either way, makes a pretty good mix

Ehh, bad teams cycle through talent. Tim Murray put together a team full of young players and then targeted a bunch of players with substance abuse issues (Ryan O'Reilly, Robin Lehner) and immature behavioral issues (Kane). He spent assets like he was on a bender and making transactions at local strip clubs (because he was). Bylsma had no idea how to communicate, and the team drifted with an immature lockerroom under the influence of excessive amounts of coke and alcohol. It didn't get better with Botterill, and it is marginally better with Adams.

Oh, how I wish you were right. Jimmy Vesey may not have played after the Sabres first acquired his rights for a 3rd round pick, but he certainly did the second time they acquired him for a 3rd round pick. This MFing team paid a 3rd round pick for Jimmy Vesey on two separate occasions…
Botterill traded ROR for the ultra nutcase Berglund so he sort of doubled down on the Murray strategy.

Honestly feel like the Flames probably have the worst of it this year. Several players of their previous core have gone on to play prominent roles in playoff teams this year.

And now 5 raise the Stanley Cup with Florida, plus gwg from Reinhart. Good showing by the former Sabres.
