There is one place in the Back Bay that has a big enough footprint for a new arena - The current Hynes Convention Center.

@BMC you have to wonder if Connecticut is pondering a move to Boston

The Mohegan Sun Arena "only" seats 10,000 people max. It would cost a fortune in money & time to make it the size of the Garden. I can see the Sun playing a few games at the Garden every season the way the UConn Huskies play at the XL Center in Hartford.

On the other hand Connecticut is a hotbed of support for women's basketball thanks to the success of the Huskies & as a result the Sun has been one of the few profitable teams in the W since the tribe bought it in 2003. I don't know if that support extends to the rest of New England. :dunno:

Is 18k sustainable, and at what price point can you sell those additional tickets for. I assume the Sun make more than average on their 10k because some people stay and dine or gamble.

I know Caitlyn Clark has singlehandedly changed the financial picture of the league, but is it sustainable? Paige Buekers coming in next year will help as well

WNBA is awesome. Stars are cool and fun and level of play is high hasn’t been diluted with too many teams.

Of course all the social media posts about the sellout last night have incel trolls hating in the comments.

It’s criminal Boston doesn’t have a team hopefully this changes soon. I like the guys on the Bruins but the NHL is a garbage product in terms of stars right now. I won’t make a political comment about Ovechkin but he is an awful human. Tkachuk and McDavid make you not want to watch.

We’ve been spoiled in Boston having such fun accessible high end athletes but that’s pretty much the entire WNBA it’s an awesome league I’d buy season tickets.

WNBA is tripling the price of peoples season tickets this year the leagues financial position is changing quickly. Sparks are bad without Brink and it was on a Tuesday there was no gimmick here the interest level is high. It’s not the Celtics but that is OK. A Boston team sells 10,000 season tickets instantly. Marquee games sellout and soft ones probably 12-15k.

This is why I think the Sun might consider playing a few games at the Garden- playing Clark's team definitely draws a bigger crowd but against another opponent very doubtful.
As for Paige Bueckers- she's had to come back from two horrific injuries so I have my doubts she'll be the superstar she was predicted to become before she got hurt. A very good player yes but not dominant or a game changer. Every time she lands on the floor I cringe, fearing another injury. And she's such a great kid it's too bad she's had to endure all this shit.

because originally the league had to get its footing/footprint and establish themselves initially w/ the NBA Backing.... once that changed.... as I stated in the Celtic thread numerous times, Brad..... the focus shifted toward the D/G-League.... is there enough interest to bring the G-League from Portland down there for a "one-off" but based on past experience, the Maine Celtics do not play well in a "neutral-site" arena..... even Cross which is bigger than the Expo in capacity doesn't help the overall experience.... keep in mind any Celtics sale/transfer includes the Maine Celtics....

Indiana has done that already... but who's the next face of the WNBA once Clark isn't the draw.... see before Clark it was Ionescu of the Liberty.... remember the 1 on 1 exhibition between Steph Curry and Sabrina.....

It was awesome. Boston should have a team. Same goes with a soccer team. We used to (Boston Breakers).

The Caitlin Clark effect is real. And it's exciting.
THE Breakers are returning in 2026..... what the NWSL is trying to figure out is the next one after.... recent reports said one market had it but backed out just recently....

I worked the game last night and it was loads of fun. I can't say I got that into the game, but I enjoyed it.

Great to see all the families, the fathers, the sons, the grandparents and, especially, the young girls so excited and admiring of their heroes.

In critical respects, American society is very sick. However, good stuff happens too,

♥️💯

I remember them saying they want to bring them back. I think it will be another name, however there are issues. The NWSL is very exciting and profitable, but there are rumblings that they want to make a new league.

It's all influx.

In regards to WNBA, Boston should have a team. There are so many talented players, but not enough teams.

like I stated in the C's thread.... the model for both the WNBA and the D/G-League are very similiar but once the decision was made to allow casino ownerships like the Sun and Aces are currently, that's why the development focus shifted for the NBA toward the G-League model, which was finally achieved once Phoenix established their affiliate...... that's why the WNBA lost the Cleveland/Houston/Sacramento markets.... if you look back at the WNBA like we do the G-League why is it that NOT More WNBA Markets exist..... and the discussion around Houston specifically as a potential hockey market post Aeros (Iowa Wild) and why the Comets faded from existence once they lost the angle they had w/ COMPAQ/Toyota Center.... almost like what Dallas' Wings ended up facing after bouncing from Detroit to Tulsa as the Shock....

Orlando isn't an easy market to schedule in either, when the Magic dominate the arena there..... it is one of the reasons the Miracle (Sun) were sold and relocated to MS, the ECHL has had issues w/ that market with the Solar Bears having to accomodate the Magic as they've become the secondary tenant there.

Yes from a bball case you are right with Buekers. The injuries may limit her potential as an impact player, league icon. I just threw her name out there because she is the only other player even in the same class of popularity in the sport

College stars don't always dominate in the WNBA it isn't automatic. WNBA is probably similar to what the original 6 was in hockey. See Aliyah Boston who was almost as accomplished as CC in college. If she was a superstar the Fever would be much better but shes just a better than average starter. The player Jaylen is dating was drafted 4 overall and is out of the league 2 years later because she wasn't good enough.

CT goes 6 deep for stars so none of them get promoted by the league hence Carrington's comments.

I'd rather get an expansion franchise than steal the Sun from CT but Mohegan is small and they can get a game or two. If someone wants to pay up and move them to the Garden great.

nope, it sounds like this a one off because the dates aligned.... 19K PLUS is what THE CAPACITY IS at the Garden. for a concert date... when it's consistently 18K for an NBA.... Different mentality/clientele between an NHL/NBA crowd even though it's the same arena..... there's been no interest in pursuing a WNBA Team here..... you also have the most iconic franchise in the world globally.... this is the Yankees of pro basketball.... why do u think the potential sale is Billion, not Million, depending on the prospective ownership....

I asked about this last night of several CT Sun fans. My understanding is basically, CT is the New England entry relative to the WNBA. I also wonder with two clubs already sharing TD Garden, where a Boston-based WNBA franchise would play.

Matthews Arena?

Not sure. They won't build a new one. It would have to be something like Matthews

It's bad enough the PWHL doesn't have a home arena. Would be cool if we had both them AND a WNBA team
they do Tsongas Center..... THE former home of pro hockey in Lowell.... until UMASS Lowell decided to annex the facility as theirs

WNBA season doesn't overlap with NBA and NHL the Garden is perfect for it hence the sellout. Madison Square Garden has no problem being home to the LIberty and hosting way more concerts.

no, Brad..... why are the Revolution fighting for an MLS SSS (Soccer Specific Stadium) That you've seen in other markets rather than sharing at Gillette as co-tenants..... the Liberty didn't always play at MSG.... I believe they've shifted to Westchester in recent years ( remember the Knicks have their G-League team in Westchester) it's rare that a WNBA team share the same arena w/ an NBA Team LIKE you're seeing w/ the Fever, who have borrowed the Colts stadium for neutral site games this year vs. the Sky.... there aren't many WNBA Teams THAT SHARE THE NBA Arena.... (PHX/MIN are two off the top of my head) has nothing to do w/ the overlap between NBA/WNBA/NBA G-League

Hutch you are out of your element don’t compare G league to WNBA one is awesome and the other straight trash. Minor league basketball isn’t popular people watch college instead. Women’s NBA is popular the ratings and attendance are exploding. Did I miss something where the Sun played the Fever or Aces? No they played a bad team and it still sold out. Frankly I’m offended that you think Boston fans are sexist and wouldnt support the league.
