Yzerman took the Lightning to 2 eastern conference finals and 1 Finals, with another playoff appearance and 2 non-playoff years, after they had missed the playoffs three straight seasons. He also drafted and brought in a slew of their core pieces.

Kucharov, Vasilievsky, Point, Palat, Corelli, Foote, Johnson, Gourde, McDonough, Serfachev, Cernak.

He’s not been remotely as successful in Detroit, but he absolutely built the core of what made Tampa work.

Yeah and they won two cups from the team Yzerman built not Brisebois.

But also he was very lucky in drafting. Both Kucherov and Point were later round picks.

I honestly feel that almost if not all late round picks are just luck. You pick the kid that actually fights past their flaws.
Yeah, it seems like teams really make their drafts in two ways:
1. Not missing on their top ten picks
2. Finding more quality NHL players in the last half of the 1st and the 2nd round than other teams (see Dallas)

I think teams used to be able to mine other countries with quality scouts or connections in those areas to find late round gems more often (like Detroit with Russia). But with all the information that's available now, after the second round, I think you're right - it's mostly just rolling the dice and hoping.

This in 99% of the cases. The other 1% usually are picks with either symbolic character or desperate grabs for players that should not be there to begin with (read: stating your pick is a player with unclear contract status or eligibility, like some late-round picks in the late 80s / early 90s from Russia, or a player who was born two days after the eligibility date and whose claim for early eligibility was not yet fully discussed).
