Brassard stinks and is one dimensional.

Boyle and Pyatt stink and are one dimensional too, but at least that one-dimension can maybe be used to stop the Pen's strong offense.

Reasonably, how much better is he than Brassard defensively? Brassard is a much better skater and has better hockey sense which are kinda useful away from the puck. Pyatt may better suited for board battles, but that is only a small part of "defensive play."

The thing about Pyatt is at worst he's a neutral player. He's also neutral at his best but...

Its about risk management. Do you want to elevate Brassard, who has been handling the puck like a hand grenade lately, against a team like the Penguins? I think its quite clear that the mandate of the Boyle/Pyatt combo is to keep the puck out of the middle of the ice and chew minutes.

Not saying thats an ideal option, but thats what happens when the roster is filled with inadequate players.
