Not only did I watch the games, but all of Honka's shifts are cat memes on my tumblr account. So there.
First off, nobody is arguing that he played "perfect". The whole shooting the puck into the shin pads thing is something he's done in Cedar Park, and it's true that he has a tendency to "thread the needle" a little too much: making risky passes through a forechecker's legs, holding the puck a little too long, etc.
But his play was solid overall. Telling anyone that his "passes were off" just speaks to a lack of context; I lost track of how many times Honka would make the absolute perfect pass, but Finland's forwards would fumble it around, make a boneheaded play to retrieve it, and then off the opponent goes in transition from a turnover. Honka made sure that Finland's PP looked historically bad rather than worse than historically bad (calling it "flawed" is a comical understatement). Just look at Finland's numbers: one of only five teams to have the man advantage 20 or more times, yet converted on zero chances. Their percentage of goals from total shots was 4% (!). Good for slightly better than dead last Germany. With only 16 points, he accounted for 12% of Finland's offense. Finland also had a really bad PK which was critical against the US (their only goal in regulation) and Sweden.
He played the toughest matchups, and did what he could with those around him. You won't find many bright spots on team Finland and certainly not from the staff. But if you had to find them, Honka was certainly up there with guys like Rantanen, Lehkonen, Hintz, and Puljujarvu (hope I'm getting that right without the benefit of google).
