He only said "it's part of the process" several times when asked about it and then said once that "young players can watch the game too." That's about it so Tortorella didn't actually say it was 5 on 5.

The team is in last place. It's been playing like a bunch of zombies on the ice for over a season. The HC obviously has no clue as to how to improve the club's play. So he sees the solution being benching the future cornerstone of the organization.
Tortorella needs to be immediately canned. This was so predictable. He's pulled this type of shit with every player that comes on the club. It's obvious that it is a psychological power play on Tortorella's part.
Everywhere he goes, it always has to be about him. Well the record for this club is what it has been for the last thirty games or so. It's terrible and he has no answers. The stink is one him.
Briere has to recognize that Tortorella is poison. If he doesn't, then he need to go as well. The organization has become an embarrassment to itself.
