No they weren't. They had plenty of guys to call up. But they thought doing that would be giving up on the playoffs. It's more of the same constant half measures across the board.
They did call them up.
Attard 12g, Belpedio 12g, Ginning 9g.

They traded for Johnson only b/c they were short 3 D-men (Walker, Seeler and Risto).

They had several AHL d-men they could have called up, but sure. They HAD NO CHOICE but to trade a pick for a rental JJ. That's definitely what rebuilding teams do.
There was a bunch of guys on waivers they could’ve claimed if they just wanted bodies.

Jacob Moevare had just been signed to an extension upon being waived.

I am excited to see Matvei Michkov in person! I really wanted him to be in a Canes jersey but I knew it wasn't possible. Still I think he's going to be a treasure. But as we all know, the treasure is the friends we made along the way.
Same! Because I'm so excited I'm mentally preparing myself for Torts to bench him midway through the first for no reason.

That's nothing. Johnson played 17 games, every game after the deadline. Belpedio played zero games after the deadline. Andrae played zero games after the deadline. Andrae in particular should have been playing, but he wasn't because of Johnson.

The only reason they "needed" him was to keep their bizarro half-in/half-out indecisive non-rebuilding playoff "run" alive.

Andrae clearly wasn't ready last year, no he shouldn't have been playing for a team in PO contention.
Not even sure he's ready this year, check back in 10-20 games.

The move was a reward for the team after trading Walker, pick #108 isn't exactly a premium asset.
And Johnson played well, 15:33 at 5x5%, xGF 54.18%, HDCF 58.02%.

Rebuilding teams don't care if they are competing for a playoff spot, and they also don't trade picks for rentals at the deadline.

I know you think literally every move Briere has made is a rebuilding move, but that just isn't the case.
