Prospect Info: #129 Arseny Gritsyuk RW

Why are we blaming SKA for wanting something to terminate a contract? Would you just let someone go when you could get something?

We all want him here.

By the way the anti-Russian stuff isn’t cool. Hate their government sure but that isn’t the people. I’m not even sure we have much room to talk these days.

Bring him here this off-season. Don't burn his ELC this season.

A full season under his belt on the ELC will be more valuable then him playing 2 games and maybe cracking the lineup in the playoff lineup. We need to save as much cap as we can with the incoming Luke Hughes deal for next season.

I know it's hard to score goals in this league but a 15-20 goal/30-40 assist guy would be a welcomed addition to the lineup. I dont want to overhype him , those seem like a realistic expectations to what he turns into.

It's perfectly reasonable to be a little exasperated at the wait.

He was drafted 6 years ago and we still may not get to see him yet.

I've heard all the arguments about how its better for his development to stay in russia, but six years is a long time to wait for a prospect, pretty normal for people to start getting antsy. Just hope hes worth the interminable wait.

We have 0 room to talk. Absolutely none.

His contract is over at the end of May and they have no more games before then, what purpose would it serve for them apart from spite to prevent this guy from going overseas six weeks sooner to play in the NHL?

There is money to be made. If you are surprised here, I don't know what to tell you. This is exceptionally on brand.

SKA St. Petersburg forward Arseni Gritsyuk is expected to sign an entry-level contract with the New Jersey Devils according to RG sources.

The one-year, two-way deal would begin next season and mark the 24-year-old winger’s long-awaited transition to the NHL. While the deal has yet to be formally announced by the club, sources indicate that negotiations are in the final stages and that both sides are optimistic about completing the process without issue.

I've got plenty to say about the geopolitical side of things but will not on a hockey forum.

I'm not anti-Russian (people). I'm anti-Russian (draft choices we have to wait 6 years to see join our team and hope the KHL team who owns his rights allows us to bring over the guy we drafted when Luke Hughes was 14 years old).

Maybe cracking the lineup?!

Justin Dowling has played FIFTY GAMES for the Devils. If Gritsyuk can't crack this lineup he can stay in Russia.

This thread was started June 22nd of 2019. 2019! That's TWO YEARS BEFORE WE HAD THE COVID VACCINE.

"Oh well we have to wait an extra season" as a reaction to this is absolutely f***ing maddening.

Stop. Drafting. Russians.

Wasn't Grits a fifth round pick? At that stage of the draft if you get a player in six years it's a grand slam home run. I have no problem drafting Russian players with later round picks if they have real upside. It beats the slugs they've picked from North America in middle to late rounds for the most part over the past few seasons.

The Devils didn't draft Russians for 10 years - between Zharkov in 2006 and Maltsev in 2016, they drafted nobody from Russia. It got them precisely nowhere.

Will the Devils maximize their time with Gritsyuk, who should've been over here 2 years ago? No, unfortunately not. If the ELC's for next year, they still get an ELC year out of it on a 24 year old player with (I think) one non-arbitration year.

Imagine to darft Colton White in fourth round instead of Kaprizov in fifth. Wild waited 5 years for him. What a waste of time.
Imagine to draft Thompson or McCarthy(say goodbye to the rights for your player) instead of Voronkov in fourth round. Really hard to wait four years.
Imagine to draft any NCAA\USHL player instead of Gritsyuk in fifth round. How many years we would wait them.

Interesting strategy when Devils have all the rights for Russian players forever, used a lot of Russian players in trades for something meaningful, and absolutely no hope in Brown\Graham\Hurtig\Hauser\Filmon and the only hope from later rounds is the only Gritsyuk.

And state this statement in the face of free sign of middle six NHL ready winger with skill. I can't seem to isolate this from the logical sequence. Its my weakness I guess.

Gritsyuk was a 5th round pick. Wanna know how many NHL games the 26 guys selected after him in the 5th round have played in their career? 1 - and it wasn't even this season.

Who else were the Devils taking in that spot that would've been an upgrade? Between Gritsyuk and their next pick (Moynihan, who they didn't sign and is currently floundering in the ECHL) who should they have taken? Only player of significant selected between the two is Silovs and his .880 SV% in 19 NHL games.

Dustin Wolf, selected 85 picks later, is the only player selected after Gritsyuk that is clearly more valuable.

This is also why he was a fifth round pick and not drafted a bit sooner…the waiting period to a degree is baked in at this point with all the non elite 18-year olds

Not sure why anyone would be upset that he has not signed a contract for next year yet. If I was a kid from a foreign country that was going to potentially spend the next 10 or 11 years playing overseas, I would probably want to spend my last summer at home rather than go and play a few games in the US and then go back home for the summer.

What .. the guy is a hockey player, and maybe has the chance to get a taste of big league hockey for a few weeks. That should be pretty appealing. Like you said .. he'll get to go back home for the summer pretty soon even if he comes to the US for a few weeks.
