OT: 120th Obsequious Banter Thread: The Fallowing of the Bone Tree

Every black bear I've ever run across in the woods has run like hell when they saw me. In habituated areas, they're like dogs begging at the kitchen table - but I never treat them as such. Like any person, you never know if they might be having a bad day.

They are tremendously strong and could remove your face with a swat in a heartbeat. They can run like hell too, even though they usually plod along. Don't try to outrun a bear. They are faster than a horse over a short distance.

Grizzly bears, I never spent time out west. I know they aren't as nice as black bears usually tend to be. They say if confronted with an aggressive black bear to yell and make yourself look larger (fan out a coat if wearing one), with Grizzlies, yes, play dead if you are ever in that unfortunate situation. You really aren't going to triumph over either if it comes down to hand to paw combat.

It was defintely a lot more scared of me than I was of it. It wasn't expecially big though, looked like a yearling maybe.

How well does the bear spray work?

No idea. In PA I carry a weapon. In NY I don't because I don't want to end up in jail.

In PA I carry for whatever shenanigans I might run into at a remote trailhead. I'm not afraid of anything in the woods. I keep it in my pack, not on my hip.

I own a fire steel and know how to use it. Much easier to use a Bic lighter.

Before I ever get into a situation that I'm trying to start a fire with a bow I'm already 10 miles to somewhere.

Dutchess County, about 2hr north of NYC. There are lots of bears (and pretty much everything else) around here.

Does shitting yourself and crying work? Pretty sure that’s what I’d do if I ran into a bear in the woods.

I don't watch TV (unless it's sports), so I cannot comment on "Alone." However, watching a guy build a very comfortable shelter inside a hollowed-out spruce tree, or beneath a hanging rock, all complete with a hearth/oven/stove, insulated walls (and sometimes windows), etc. in an edited 30-45 minute video fascinates me.

If you saw my previous post, I was asking what area you live in. I have plenty of experience with black bears, cool animals! Like I'd said, mostly docile, but I'd certainly never want to tangle with one, even a small one.

My bad, I missed that one. I'm up at our cabin in the Catskills near Roscoe NY. We've had bears in the past wreaking havoc on the bird feeders, but that was before we had any cameras on the house. He ran off as soon as we yelled at him this morning. He'll be back eventually though...

I've hiked in the Slide Mt., Hunter Mt., Indian Head Mt. areas before. Really nice country there.

It's one of my favorite spots on earth. Beautiful place with arguably the best trout fishing on the East Coast. It's the birthplace of American fly fishing so the history is so rich. It scratches the hell out of my fishing nerd itch.
