Ideally if AM34 wants to stay in Toronto, he extends during the regular season this year. I doubt this will happen.

He is under contract for 2 more years (this year and next). In his final year, he has a NMC (No movement clause).

No Movement Clause (NMC)
No Movement means the player cannot be waived, assigned to minors, or traded without approval. This also means they cannot be exposed in an Expansion Draft and must be protected.

kicks in: End of July 2023. (not sure of the exact date) (Summer 2023 sometime it seems).
contract - Auston Matthews Contract, Cap Hit, Salary and Stats - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

What would you do in the Summer of 2023 if Matthews isn't extending ?

Trade, can't risk he walks.
Hope he stays, but risk he walks "for nothing".

You can’t let him walk for nothing, if it was 10 teams you could go into the year, but with NMC, that could really set the Leafs back if he walks.

I don’t think you trade him unless he comes out and says I won’t be coming back. The Leafs are at his will and they have to ride it out and hope he resigns.

Lots of elite players have signed 5 year contracts and only Tavares has walked. If Matthews does, so be it. Forcing him out due to fear isn't even worth thinking about

He can't be extended until the NMC kicks in. You can't sign an extension with more than a year left on your contract. It was put in place in 2004/05 since players had less leverage in a holdout to get their deals re-worked. So, if you were unhappy with your final 3 years, you couldn't hold out and force a large extension on the back-end to add term (or re-work the contract in general).

We know Dubas wouldn't have the guts to trade him.

Can you put pressure on a player ?
Like: if you don't sign today we are trading you to the Flyers ? Im sure that is legal.

But can you sign a deal with a team (Flyers) but it be contingent upon AM not signing with you ? (Doubt it).

The cap will explode, he'll get like 8 x 16 and the leafs will have to decide on re-signing Nylander or using his cap-hit and a potential lower Tavares amount (or no tavares at all) on major team changes. Marner will be getting like 13-14m/per too

They essentially have to keep him if the intention is to (continue to) contend. I can't particularly fathom what kind of return he'd bring that helps the team out right now.

yes matthews will ask for like 20 million a year and marner will ask for 25 million (a little extra to make up for the elc bonuses)

NMC? is it a full or can we ask him to submit a list
Full.

NMC is No movement.

No Trade Clause (NTC)

NTC means the player cannot be traded without approval.

No Movement Clause (NMC)

No Movement means the player cannot be waived, assigned to minors, or traded without approval. This also means they cannot be exposed in an Expansion Draft and must be protected.

Modified NTC or NMC

Modified No Trade or No Clause limits the # of teams and time period when the clause is in effect.

Keep him for as long as we can, and hope that he re-signs. If he walks keep that cap space for McDavid in the next year to come home.
