Since I can't see the game, I took The Child ice skating. She's supposed to practice between lessons. I loved her confidence, but I grew up in Richmond so everything I did was in rollerblades and that was 20 years ago. So I warned her not to rely on me. That was a mistake.

Notes: 1. ice skating is easy. I mean, balance is harder, but holy shit the agility is incredible. Just shift weight and stuff happens! I was cruising around doing things while The Child was stuck on the wall lol. She refused to let me tow her. She worked on her beginner exercises there. She eventually said "I regret my decision. I forgot this was hard" and we left. Oddly rational for her. But she did well.

2. Public skates are ass. It's like skiing a green slope. Everyone was going below what seemed my easiest pace. Pain in the ass.

3. Rental skates are ass. Or my feet are. Or both. I don't know. I need to investigate this further. Running causes a lot of crippling foot pain after a couple minutes. So does skating. This seems incorrect.

4. The Child was annoyed and amazed that I just hopped on the ice and went. She thought I was going to fall a lot and be stuck on the wall with her. She looked forward to this. Harkens back to the first time I went skiing with the wife and future in laws and I learned to ski in the space between the lift exit and the start of the slope. "It took me so long to do that WTF." Don't know what to say, get good.

5. Goddamnit I am not actually good, but now a fire is in me to get back into roller hockey or learn ice. I don't have time or money for this. Damn the child.

Yep. I finally broke down and bought a music player with a decent DAC.

Some audiophiles I know swear by the $9 Apple dongle fwiw.
The tip is appreciated. In the early stages of the Research Phase so im just gonna slow play it.
I have dozens of pairs of headphones but the ones I take outside with me daily are these cheap Sony's that i've seen for $12 online some places.

I work in audio and I often find myself using the cheap ones; theyre that effective.

Public skating is horrible. They cram as many people as they can physically allow; this isn't unique to any city... they all do it. No idea if they have this in the DC area, but look for ice times billed as "family skates". After I got annoyed trying to teach my daughter to skate at public skates, we found these family skates where they only allow 60 people on the ice for 60-90 minutes. In our case, they break the rink into three sections, one quarter for hockey/puck play, one quarter for things like giant lego, ring toss, on ice bowling, etc... and the middle half for general skating. My daughter improved significantly using these sessions to supplement her weekly hockey sessions.

Do yourself a favour and get your own skates. Rental skates are unquestionably horrible. Skates are meant to mold to your feet. Rentals will always make your feet hurt.

Honestly sounds like a skill issue for her

Rental skates are absolutely horrible, you would be correct. They're not made for comfort like actual ice/roller boots are. They're made so that, essentially, they don't get broken in

And yes public skating sucks. The ice gets unskatebale after 10 mins.
