Prospect Info: 111th Overall (4th Round) Jeremy Swayman (G)

He deserves it - he had a great season.

I'd be surprised if he won, but getting this far on a team like Maine is quite an accomplishment.

they dont give it to goalies very often. ryan miller in 2001 and robb stauber in 1988. so the odds are against swayman here. 2 goalies in the past 40 years.

Mike Richter award winner for Best NCAA goalie is announced today some time - swayman was one of the final 5 goalies nominated.

Hobey baker announced tomorrow - swayman was one of final 3 players named.

Maine didn't have the most amazing team but Swayman carried them through a lot of their games. Will be interesting to see where he plays this upcoming season.

ultimately goalies succeed or fail based on how they respond to nhl pressure. in terms of pure mechanics you can see so many kids get called the next sure thing and poof they just explode on contact.

even guys like jim carey and Andrew racroft and blain lacher who have some nhl success in their first year or two can pop without a moments notice and be crap

we see how little difference there is between nhl success and ahl career when we see guys like Andrew Hammond become an overnight sensation... guys like brian boucher toss out 3-4 shutouts in a row... guys like steve mason have vezina type seasons...

and then poof... pop...

as a kid... I dont think i got more excited about anyone moreso than hannu toivonen… and he had his handful of games and looked so delicious... and then poof. maybe he got a hamstring problem? we spent a first round pick on Malcolm subban because he has all the athletics in the world and comes from that family known to be cocky. youd think he would have turned out to be great... but it aint happening

almost any ahl goalie has the raw tools to be able to play goal at the nhl… glove... rebound control... angles... for a short time if their confidence is on overdrive they can be called up from the ahl and put up adequate results. but its how goalies handle adversity that eventually determins their nhl career. all goalies will let in a bad goal from time to time. they will all cost the team a win from time to time. making spectacular 10 bell saves is great... but its how you limit the bad goals during your struggle times that make or break you.

im happy for swayman. I hope he works out. I like that vladar had a rebound season. I want to get very high on these kids but history shows us most young goalies dont pan out. the goalies that eventually become great are rarely the ones we had on our radar.

I mean binnington was in our system but did any of us know he was about to hit the mother load? when tim Thomas showed up he was near 30... did any of us have a clue what he was going to do for us? even halak when we picked him off the junkpile... the majority of posters here were crying how we were losing kubodin and couldnt fanthom that halak would be an improvement

goaltending is a tricky tricky tricky business because its so hard to foresee the future how will a goalie handle his adversity. thats why when you get someone steady like rask, you hold onto him for dear life. the number of consistent goalies holding down jobs in the nhl is rarely more than 10-15 deep. these guys become worth their weight in gold

He was clearly developed when I sat right behind the goal watching him play PC. Wasn’t dominant we had a couple goals scored that were reversed and put 4 good ones on the board. But I think he’s one of the better goalies outside the NHL.

I’d sort of rather throw him into the fire if he wins the backup job. If the cap is gonna go down that means we can’t pay Rasks backup when he gets a raise. 3 years of an ELC would be ideal.

My ideal scenario would place Swayman and Keiser as the young tandem in Providence while Vladar backs up Tuukka for a year. Then, if he’s amenable to continue playing, reach an agreement, but not sign him until after the expansion draft. Protect Vladar instead.
This way we’d have Rask for another season or two while the three muchachitos battle it out to replace him and take the backup position. Low cost protection in goal assuming, and a big assumption indeed, that two of the three develop as planned

I'd prefer Vladar build off this season and get the starting job in Providence with either Swayman/Keyser backing him up (then the other goes to Atlanta).

Would have loved to see Swayman get the nod for the Hobey Baker, but winning the Richter and being an All-American is an amazing accomplishment. I knew going in Swayman would be a long shot for the Hobey, as goalies don't generally get it. I'm pumped to see where he starts next season. If Vladar doesn't make the jump to the B's back-up role, I think I'd like to see Swayman go to ATL and hopefully be their #1. The more rubber this kid sees the better he gets. I'd love if he stays with PRO though because I'd have multiple chances to see him play between Hartford, Bridgeport, Providence and Springfield.

Yeah, Vladar hasn’t shown enough consistency to backup Rask next year. Vladar is only 22 with one above-average season to his name in the AHL. That one season happened to be absolutely phenomenal, being this year, but it was also cut short. He’s had his moment before this year, but the sample was limited.

In a perfect world, provided that Halak will be offered at least one lucrative contract:

NHL Goalies:

Rask is your obvious starter.

Lagace is signed to a one-year NHL contract in some capacity. He’s the first backup solution.

AHL Goalies:

Vladar is your starter.

Swayman is his backup or alternate starter.

ECHL Goalies:

Kyle Keyser gets back on the right track in terms of health and starts the season in Atlanta or wherever the Bruins assign him.

I think that Vladar absolutely has potential to be a solid goalie in the NHL, but he also just needs a little bit of time. Have no issues with him getting a few starts in the NHL next year if allocated, of course. As the peanut himself @lost peanut says, Vladar could potentially be selected by Seattle in the expansion draft as well.

Lot of factors here with Swayman in the fold, but having patience is the best route with goalies.

Which goalie, then, should be protected? Rask is an UFA at the end of the season. No sense in protecting him when it is unlikely that he would sign with Seattle. Unless, of course he is signed to an extension before the draft. In that case it could lose Vladar.

It makes sense, if Tuukka wants to continue playing, to agree to sign him after the expansion draft so the team doesn’t lose Vladar.

It still seems a bit too early to have an answer in expansion draft projections for Boston, IMO. One of several young, talented effective players from Boston will be made available— most likely on defense.

Will Vladar be the guy that Seattle wants? What other goalies will be potentially available then? Is Vladar going to have another good year? How about the defense? Are the young defenders like Lauzon, Clifton and Grzelcyk going to be exposed? The forwards? Who will be here? Who won’t be?

There’s just too many variables at the moment, IMO.

That's why we have these discussions on potential personnel moves for the future. No one has the answers, but it doesn't stop us from speculating.

Swayman is off to a very good start down at Providence

3-0 with a 2.00 GAA and 928 save percentage

Its a relieve to know that the Bruins have goaltending depth and potential future starter. Insurance just in case

How long before swayman/vladar get their chances in the NHL? 2 years from now?

Seattle, for one reason....

Maybe, but u think they could get a better NHLer out of Boston than a goalie prospect?

Although I own Swayman in a dynasty league, so would love if he was the one of the two left standing :P

you can only protect one prospect.... this is the Swayman thread solely, no reason why u needed to add Vladar in to this a 5th year pro
