Due to the damaging affects of flooding in Ruidoso, NM, the track has canceled the remainder of its meet. Similar to last year, Albuquerque Downs will host some of the events originally scheduled for Ruidoso including significant quarter horse trials.

From what was posted on one site, Ruidoso Downs racing will run in Albuquerque on August 4th, 5th and 6th. Finals will be back on Labor Day also at Albuquerque.

Key race dates:
  • All American Futurity trials: August 4–5
  • All American Derby & Oaks trials: August 6
  • Finals for all three races: September 1 (Labor Day) at Albuquerque Downs

Saratoga Race Course (NY)
  • Card: Weather interfered with some of what should have been a solid card. Ten of the 12 races held purses $100,000+.
  • Handle: $22 million+. Reduced fields due to scratches hurt handle.
  • Race 11: Excellent Truth (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) defeated She Feels Pretty (John Velazquez/Cherie DeVaux) in a thrilling Grade I Diana Stakes ($500,000), Brown won the race for the ninth time in the past 10 years and it was his 10th Diana victory. DeVaux was once an assistant to Brown,

The 2 could be a live pick in Saratoga 5. Jose Ortiz picked up the mount for a Laurel-baaed trainer.

Edit: caught in a speed dual with the 4 for the lead then faded. Chalk finished 1-2.

A huge weekend for midsummer racing on Saturday with Del Mar (CA), Saratoga (NY) and the $1,000,000 Haskell at Monmouth (NJ) among the desired destinations.

Finger Lakes (NY) has arguably its biggest day today (Monday) with Irad Ortiz, Jr., Kendrick Carmouche, Ricardo Santana and Manny Franco among the visiting jocks.

  • July 20 is the biggest horse race in New England, the $250,000 Spirit of Massachusetts trot at Plainridge (MA). Maine is the only other New England state that currently employs live racing.

Journalism gets up to win the Haskell in another hard working race.

NYRA sponsored the Haskell yet the finale at Saratoga and Monmouth go off simultaneously. Neither could flinch for two minutes?

Wondering if the schedule is catching up to him. Think he goes to the pacific classic next.

The 8 in the UN Stakes pulled up. They said it was a fetlock but didn’t hear anything after that.
The latter was from Brittany Russell's barn. She mentioned in an update her horse was euthanized.

Halina's Forte, who couldn't win her most recent starts at Prairie Meadows (IA) or Mahoning Valley (OH), won a Grade 2 at Saratoga at 24-to-1. Irad Ortiz, Jr. picked up the mount. He had won on the filly the last time they teamed which was her most recent victory and also at Saratoga almost a year ago.

Yikes! A field of five for the Jim Dandy on Saturday. Sovereignty, Sandman and Baeza are entered.

A hearty 11 entered in the Lake George, however.

  • Four Bagger: Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode four winners.
  • Hat Trick: Florida Panthers; connections past and present won races 1, 2 and 3.

  • Race 2: Noble Confessor (Irad Ortiz Jr./Todd Pletcher) broke his maiden thought it took seven tries Vinnie Viola owns.
  • Race 3: Bobrovsky (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Dale Romans) broke by 10 1/2 lengths. He opened quickly and buried the competition. A.sharp looking 2-year-old. He was purchased for $37,000 and won this $80,000 purse at Saratoga in his second start. Part-owner is trainer Dale Romans.

Perry Ouzts is poised to make North America history as he could surpass the all-time mounts record held by Russell Baze with 53,578 rides. Ouzts, now 71 years of age, has been riding 54 years. He could smash the mark at Cincinnati's Belterra Park this week.

Entering Friday (he rode twice on Friday which is not included in this data)

Injuries:
  • Joe Bravo has been out since June with a broken finger that required surgery but oddly went unreported until recently.
  • Tiago Pereira will undergo surgery to repair an eye socket. He will be out a minimum eight weeks from today.
  • Tyler Conner has a broken bone in his neck among other concerns but possibly escaped more serious injury (July 24) which necessitated the cancellation of the remainder of the card at Colonial through courtesy.
Delaware Park (Delaware) and Monmouth (New Jersey):
  • Canceled: Extreme heat.
Colonial Downs (Virginia):
  • Race 1: A double dead=heat in the opener. I don't recall the most recent time I have seen that, it has to be decades. A dead-heat for 1st/2nd and a separate dead-heat for 3rd/4th.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Switchin' to Glide caught my eye. The name of the horse has to be a reference to a rather obscure new wave song from 1980 of the same title; the band, the Kings, hailed from Ontario.

^ Looks like "decades" is not exaggerated. Initial research and seemingly incomplete by those who have the means, the most recent double dead-heat in a race was in 1980 in California.

UPDATE
Someone found a far more recent double-DH and that was 2013 at Saratoga.

In today's fourth race at Del Mar, Bob Baffert will debut the $3,000,000 Brant (named after Peter Brant) owned by Zedan Racing and the $875,000 Balboa owned by the conglomerate that begins as SF Racing.

The $3,000,000 is the largest sum ever paid for a 2-year-old at the Ocala (FL) sales.

Perry Ouzts picked up a mount in Belterra 6 today. That could impact when he eclipses the official record. He is now scheduled to ride in races 5, 6 and 8.

Saratoga (New York):
  • Handle: $33.4 million.
  • Race 2: Soldier N Diplomat (Jose Ortiz/Steve Asmussen), a $950,000 Army Mule colt, won his debut by a neck. Owned by Vinny Viola.
  • Race 10: Sovereignty (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $500,000 Grade 2 Jim Dandy by a length in another victorious outing. Sovereignty has also won the Fountain of Youth, Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes this year. The only horse to beat him in his past six races is Tappan Street, in the Florida Derby, who has since been sidelined by a leg injury.

Belterra (Ohio):
  • Perry Ouzts won his first mount today -- race 5 -- which tied the record for most rides by a jockey. Blazing Tony was sent off at 4-to-5 and won rather comfortably.

  • Perry Ouzts finished third in race 6 to break the record. The jockey is 71 years of age and rode for the 53,579th time.

Del Mar (California):
  • Handle: $25 million.
  • Race 3: Brant (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert), a $3,000,000 Gun Runner colt whose purchase price is the largest in the history of the 2-year-old Ocala (FL) sales, dominated by more than five lengths in a debut.

  • Race 8: Nysos (Flavien Prat/Bob Baffert) improved to 6 5-1-0 with a win in the Grade 2 $300,000 San Diego Handicap.
  • Race 10: Lovesick Blues (Geo Franco/Librado Boracio) won the $400,000 Grade I Bing Crosby Handicap amid some handicappers' furor due to CAW involvement.

  • Bob Baffert's $3 million debut: Well that was extraordinary. Baffert ran five horses that cost $9.125 million at their most recent sales. He finished 5 2-2-1.
