looking at that 4 horse's pp's - not a pig after all. the firmer the turf the more positive this horse will respond. that move in santa anita was the tip off. oh wel... next race.

Flavien Prat just followed the Classic victory with another win and with a horse bred in Canada. He should win Jockey of the Year with some comfort now.
 
Del Mar has done roughly $160 million in handle combined the last two days with two races remaining. Last year's total was $176 million.
 
The totals I heard were combined figures. As such, $179 million was bet on the 2-day Breeders' Cup weekend which is the third highest mark.

More betting figures from Saturday's Breeders' Cup card:

S106.7 million bet Saturday was up 4% from 2023.

The Classic handle was $17.4 million ($24.5 million with exotics) and that was up 15.4% from 2023. The shift to an earlier post time seemed to aid.

  • Knight's Choice (Robbie Dolan/John Symonds and Sheila Laxon) shocked a nation by winning the 164th running of the $5.6 million (U.S.) Melbourne Cup at the unlikely odds of 90-to-1. Among the defeated was Japan-entry Warp Speed (Akira Sugawara/----) who lost by mere inches. The Melbourne Cup is known as The Race That Stops A Nation as locals commonly watch the mid-Tuesday afternoon race. Knight's Choice, an Australian by birth, was originally purchased for $1,000 and later sold for $85,000.

Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Race 5: Certainly, one of the most fortuitous payouts I have seen this year nut a daily double paid $1,170 with 10-1 and 12-1 shots winning. Only $3,000 or so in the pool. That bettor should be ecstatic.

Depends on the jurisdiction. New York is costly. California has become geographically undesirable. Florida is seasonal and while weather is attractive much of the year, there is a falloff in the summer. Arkansas is hot and growing but mostly a winter/spring destination.
Available races as a whole are down from 20 years ago. Breeding is lagging due to costs. The glut of super trainers doesn't support the person whose means are lacking by comparison. Ultimately, bettors prefer larger field sizes yet that is a concern because the reduced breeding and the inevitable scratches cause frustration and displeasure. The involvement of HISA has supporters and detractors with legislation causing consternation in some corners.

Maryland will be reducing race days next year and while that stings, the lesser races there could boost field sizes in nearby places such as Virginia and maybe Delaware, New Jersey and Philly; mostly though at Colonial due to the turf course.

New York has become Chad Brown's playground, especially multiple horses in turf races and that can be a turnoff.

It isn't at crisis mode just yet but some ingenuity is needed. If places like California and even Texas eventually allow sports betting, maybe that enhances the sport depending on the language and if it relates to parimutual betting. The time of the C-virus oddly aides racing as it was a rare sport ongoing thus the betting numbers were exaggerated.
