I think his measuring stick is against the top non-99/66 centers of the 90s.
IMO, he stacks up well to Forsberg/Sakic/Yzerman/Federov/Modano/Francis. I get the sense the Avs and Wings guys are more respected based on the NHL100 thing, but they were also on stacked teams whereas Malkin didn't get to play with Crosby 5-on-5 mostly.

I don't think Kane is that far off either.
