Seems obvious that Laviolette is trying to see if/how Cuylle and Othmann each fit in a potential checking line role and that he wants to see these two (likely) top 6 lines as well. That Laf has played every game means all the more reason to keep him out to facilitate those looks.

I've not been super impressed with him either, but the idea that he's been so awful is getting ridiculous. He's been meh, mid. He joins the entire rest of the top 12 forwards besides noted preseason beast, Kakko.

Probably both, really. He gave him a bunch of looks around the lineup, and he isn't going to start the season as the 13th F obviously, he'll be in the top 9, but this might also be a bit of a wakeup call of "look, take this seriously, you need to show us something"

I dont' think he's exactly a bust (as in, he'll still be a NHL player one way or another) but he sure has ended up in a difficult situation. He has flashed now and then over the past several years but never consistently and never has really nailed down a solid spot in the lineup probably through a combination of what he has struggled to bring to the NHL level and the coaches/Rangers not letting him play through it with minutes.
