An unspoken "downside" of Staal is that the team basically has to play hot potato with the puck after a prolonged shift in their own end and by the time they change guys, the other team has already set up shop in their end again.

It's not 100% on him, but it's also not a coincidence that their transition game looks a gazillion times better without him.
