OT: 10,000 Pt XLIV - Guitar Things

  • Work is still on-going to rebuild the site styling and features. Please report any issues you may experience so we can look into it.
My top ten albums of 2024:

1. Spectral Wound - Songs of Blood and Mire (punky, fast, black metal)
2. Selbst - Despondency Chord Progression (progressive, bleak black/death)
3. Ceremony of Silence - Halios (black/death with outstanding percussion)
4. Neon Nightmare - Faded Dream (World Coming Down worship)
5. Dvne - Voidkind (progressive sludge)
6. Panzerfaust - The Sons of Perdition - Chapter IV: To Shadow Zion (black/death, like a combo of Mgla and Ulcerate)
7. Thanatotherion - Alienation Manifesto (janky black/death)
8. Thy Catafalque - XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek (a mix of genres and styles built around a black metal base)
9. Judas Priest - Invincible Shield (something of a return to form)
10. Ulcerate - Cutting the Throat of God (more of the same from them)
Oh man, I didn't know Ulcerate put out a new record this year

What the hell, Japan?

For context: This is an adapted "based on a true story" tale of Finnish WW2 sniper Simo Hayha, generally believed to be the most prolific sharpshooter in military history.

Except in it Simo Hayha is a generically attractive moe-moe anime girl.

No, that last sentence is not a mistake.

This is what happens when you can walk to a new Round1….

From what I understand this UI/layout change was not intentional. The issue is that a lot of the plugins and other things that went into the form that HF has used since the switch from vBulletin to Xenforo broke with the software upgrade and it's going to take some time for the admins and site owners to a) find and get/purchase new, compatible plugins and whatnot that can try to restore some of the previous look and b) actually get things installed and tested and ensure that everything works as intended.

The site being stuck with this crap format is simply because getting it back online with a default template was considered more important than waiting and fiddling to see if they could kludge together an approximation of the old site without knowing how things may have to adapt moving forward.

So it sucks but it is what it is and is also hopefully only temporary (but maybe not.)

In addition to the layout being shonky you may find that some features like tables and particularly fiddly post formatting will be borked for now. If you have anything that you've done previously that is now broken (like, say, the prospect thread. It's now a complete mess) I've been told that you shouldn't attempt to fix it until we know for sure whether or not future updates will be able to restore the old functionality. Because it'd suck if you take a ton of time to alter a table so that it works properly only to find out that they're able to restore old tables to functionality and now the new one is broken or worse than it was before.

For those that couldn't get into the forum at all, clear your browser cache and whatever old shortcut you used to get in here should work again as opposed to what the forum looked like when it "broke" yesterday.

SNOGs have been suspended indefinitely. :sarcasm:

I may want to do something temporary like not do the tables until we know more.

Having actually designed, implemented, and rolled out a comprehensive phpBB/vBulletin era forum overhaul in a past professional life my heart goes out to the devs. I can think of few things as tedious, convoluted, and ultimately thankless as maintaining and modernizing legacy forum tech stacks.

For those not in this business, you may be shocked to learn that a good portion of mid-tier internet destinations are built on super ancient (in internet dev years) tech stacks. It’s both a testament to their overall quality how durable they’ve proven to be, but also just how huge a pain in the ass it is to update these legacy systems.

Pour one out for the forum devs.
