bad goaltending
bad coaching
no depth outside of crosby/malkin
karlsson/letang are old
I mean rakell has like 8 pts in 11 games. Even Petterson has 6 pts. It doesn't feel like they don't have depth. Could be another Gibby opportunity though. That being said watching Reimer the other night not sure I want to trade him at the moment.

So why us Pit struggling so much. They seem to be getting good production. Is goaltending their downfall or D? Or both?
Their goaltending is bad (.886 save percentage), but their defense is even worse. They're the only team giving up more 5-on-5 shots against than the Ducks. Karlsson has never been good at defending and he's older now, plus Letang has seemingly fallen off a cliff, Pettersson has taken a step back, and all of their forwards are like 50 years old.

So getting better goaltending would help, but it wouldn't be a cure-all.

I've always felt like that having Karlsson on a team is almost like having an extra forward out there but one less defenseman. It makes Makar look even better given how he's good defensively.

Years ago Doug Wilson seemed to think that having Burns and Karlsson would do for them what Pronger and Niedermayer did for Anaheim except that Pronger and Niedermayer could defend at an elite level and still put up 60ish points. While Burns and Karlsson are giving up leads left and right.

Previous GDT Team Leaders were fake news. Forgot that NHL.com listed "last 5 games" and not season totals. My spookiest apologies.

Watch them being gifted Gavin McKenna in '26 and/or Landon DuPont in '27.
