Post-Game Talk (GBU): #1 The Song Remains the Same

"Chris Drury wouldn't have won a cup if he was the No. 1 player on Colorado."

Others brought up International play. I could care less about International play.

When I talk about ROR not winning I am talking about playoffs. He doesn't know what winning teams look like, unlike Drury who made the playoffs most of his career before becoming captain in Buffalo.

Most will tell you ROR is our leader.

Lindy Ruff coaching Jack Eichel would be more entertaining then Dan Bylsma that's for sure.

i can't even...

ROR should obviously be captain, whether he is Drury level or not. why is Gionta still captain? Why are we the only team with an undersized aging 4th liner as our captain? besides of course for all the cliches constantly churned out by the media about how GREAT and wonderful he will be for all our young players. How much worse could this team and its young players have possibly have been since we've signed Gionta? and even better he isn't ready to retire...so maybe we will get him for 3 more years

At 37 with deal expiring next year, Gionta says he has no plans for retirement

Not at all.

But you are implying one (or more) of the following:

1. Winning a Cup is only possible with Drury-clone-like leadership.
2. Current Sabres roster, if left static, will never have the leadership ability to win a Cup. No innate leadership growth is possible.
3. Neither system nor coaching contributes significantly to winning a Cup, leadership / leadership contribution dominates.
4. You can't be a winner unless you've won.

Argument #4 reminds me of the late 1970's thru early 1980's TV commercials for the US Navy, after conscription ended, with the oft-cited paradox: "Can't get a job without experience? Can't get experience without a job? GO NAVY."

All of the above?

I know, its all the coach.

No it's not. If you've been reading closely, it's the coach because the coach has demonstrated in multiple years on 2 separate teams he only knows one system (despite his protestations of "watching a lot of hockey when I wasn't coaching for a year, seeing what I could learn, what I would do in each situation"), and his system is not suited for the current Sabres roster composition.

Change the system, or change the coach.

Gionta is a valuable bottom 6 player. Foligno and Larsson could not get it going without jim.

we have an entire team full of "valuable bottom 6 players" it seems.

and a defense corps full of "valuable 3rd pairings".

and a low energy head coach who would make a great natural supplement for sleeping disorders zzz zzz zzz

what do we do about it?.... extend the highly deserving Murray! :shakehead

Because Foligno and Larsson work well with anybody else... Gionta has value for us, even if he is on the 4th line. Like Legwand.

we have 2 million in cap space available on one of the worst teasm in the league... therefore you could argue dead weight like the Giontas/Moulsons/Gorges/etc.'s are keeping us from the ability to even potentially acquire anyone better. no one would want him in a trade. hes on the 4th line so how can he even effectively lead... besides saying "show up early to the rink!! eat right!! rah rah rah" Not sure where you see value.

I'm not sure I understand the huge commotion and second guessing after just 1 game. In my experience, having watched hockey obsessively for 30 years, A team can lose 1 member of the top 6, 2 if they are very deep, and still be consistently good.

Any more than that and a team declines. Buffalo was without Eichel, and Okposo, lost Kane during the game, and RoR was clearly not near 100%. Thats 4 of our best 6 forwards down or hurting. Add in Kulikovs injury and we were down 5 of our top 8 players. No one is THAT deep. Yet we still weren't totally outclassed. Most of the injured guys are short term, which should help Buffalo improve on offense quickly.

So don't judge the season dead just yet.

disagree. we WERE indeed totally outclassed to the eye test, despite whether or not Montreal went a long stretch without a shot. We weren't exactly dominating them . They are a mediocre team and we never had a chance. We have an extremely shaky defense and a goalie that only Tim Murray thinks will be a true #1 who is capable of staying healthy. wait until Sunday night's **** show

I disagree entirely with the "never had a chance" idea. We played better than them most of the game and outshot them 31 to 24. We also out-hit them, out performed them on special teams, drew more penalties and were far better on the draw.

There were stretches where we absolutely hemmed them in the zone. We were within 1 goal in the third and forced Montoya to make some tough stops at times.

That being said, we certainly didn't hem them in near enough, didn't capitalize on our prime chances (such as the Kane breakaway), and didn't get great goaltending. But is any of that suprising (other than the goaltending) with more than half our top 6 out or hampered by injury, our #2 defensman out and players who DID play banged up?

Given the factors above, judging this team by one game is silly. Its a long season and most opf these guys arent long term injuries. Give it a couple weeks and then see where we are before you write the season off. After all look at what the Penguins did last year, and they stunk for far far more than 1 game.

@Offthepipe

Welcome!!! I love the username.

Until you have an avatar, I will picture you either as former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin, or former Washington DC mayor Marion Berry.

Because international rosters and NHL ones are in any way comparable. :shakehead

I didn't bring up International play. Someone tried to tell me O'Reilly is a winner because he won gold with Canada.

All O'Reilly has known in the NHL is losing.
