I'll try to be a contrarian here and say that sometimes those 4th line identities infuse the young players and top lines with hard work via osmosis.

If you look at a team like the sabres who have a ton of young talent and are utter garbage I think you could perhaps identify hardworking, gritty vets on their 4th line as a thing they've always lacked and has perhaps hurt their play mindset
okposo and girgeson were gritty vets.

Last year's starting 4th line got destroyed in goals even when it was being hyped up by the team and easily-led idiots in the media like COC

Deslauriers with Hathaway - 5 GF 13 GA in 298:07

Deslauriers with Poehling - 1 GF 5 GA in 161:00

Have you considered the 4th line is not only bad at stopping goals, but also expensive?

Checkmate tankers. Bob Clarke wins again.

As a nighthawk who needs his alone time, I truly cherish West Coast games that start after the wife and child have gone to bed. I'm more excited to have an excuse to drink late night Polish beers in my newly-furnished and arranged office/guest room/guitar stash/den than I am for the excuse itself.

Still rocking my Flyers sweatshirt and hat as is tradition, maybe the spirit will catch me at gametime. My main dread is another 65+ nights of Jim Jackson's obnoxious water-carrying.

Well to be fair the team as a whole didn't score very well. So within the context it's somewhat to be expected. You're going to have to go with a qualitative eye test to understand some 4th lines impacts IMO.
The eye test showed they got crushed playing weak competition

Deslauriers, Hathaway, Poehlinhg and Cates were last in GF/60 of all the regulars, and their defense wasn't close to making up for it.

4th lines don't score. I mean if the median 3rd line forward scores 23 ES points, 4th lines are generally pitiful offensively.
So you're looking for players who can control possession and wear down opponents with an aggressive forecheck.
Last season:
Poehling: CF 49.74%, xGF 54.99%, HDCF 55.61%
Hathaway: CF 50.45%, xGF 56.22%, HDCF 57.25%
Cates; CF 54.90%, xGF 60.96%, HDCF 63.36%

Laughton not so good, which is why he should be a LW, not a center.
