I think this is a plausible explanation:

I think it is the league trying to balance national tv commitments on both sides of the border. Oilers-Wild is a national game on both sides of the border. Sportsnet probably doesn’t want it for after 9pm eastern. That means Carolina/Buffalo, which is also a TNT game in the US, has to move up an hour early to accommodate and make the double header.

No, it is specifically an awarded goal. Doesn't require a shot to be taken, and therefore no shot needs to be "registered" on the counting stats.

How the f*** can you score a goal and not register a shot?

99.9% sure NHL rules are if a player with an open net breakaway has a penalty committed against him the goal is automatically awarded. It’s to protect player safety. Same as if the hurricane threw his stick to prevent the ENG.

re: the awarded goal, I did the digging. from the 2023-24 .pdf version of the NHL rulebook (these rules have been in there long before that version, this is the version I used). Rule 25.1 and rule 57.4 (and I will avoid comment on the redundancy in the rule book - there are other redundancies in there too, as I'm sure many are aware).

Rule 25 – Awarded Goals
25.1 Awarded Goal – A goal will be awarded to the attacking team when
the opposing team has taken their goalkeeper off the ice and an
attacking player has possession and control of the puck (or would
have gained possession and control) in the neutral or attacking zone,
without a defending player between himself and the opposing goal,
and he is prevented from scoring as a result of an infraction
committed by the defending team (see 25.3 Infractions – When
Goalkeeper is Off the Ice, below).

25.3 Infractions – When Goalkeeper is Off the Ice – Refer to the
Reference Tables – Table 12 – Summary of Awarded Goals (When
Goalkeeper has been Removed for an Extra Attacker) (page 143) for
a list of the infractions that shall result in an awarded goal when the
goalkeeper has been removed for an extra attacker (see specific rule
numbers for complete descriptions).

Rule 53 Rule 57

57.4 Awarded Goal - If, when the opposing goalkeeper has been removed
from the ice, a player in control of the puck (or who could have
obtained possession and control of the puck) in the neutral or
attacking zone is tripped or otherwise fouled with no opposition
between him and the opposing goal, thus preventing a reasonable
scoring opportunity, the Referee shall immediately stop play and
award a goal to the attacking team.

As I noted, similar to the throwing-the-stick when a player is on a breakaway to an empty net:
53.8 Awarded Goal - If, when the opposing goalkeeper has been
removed, a member of the defending team, including the Coach or
any non-playing person, throws or shoots any part of a stick or any
other object or piece of equipment at the puck or puck carrier in the
neutral or his own defending zone, thereby preventing the puck carrier
from having a clear shot on an “open net”, a goal shall be awarded to
the attacking side.
For the purpose of this rule, an “open net” is defined as one from
which a goalkeeper has been removed for an additional attacking
player. The goalkeeper is considered off the ice once the replacement
player has entered the playing surface.


Note: I did not find any rule requiring Zach Benson to be assigned an automatic minor penalty for simply playing hard and demonstrating NHL-caliber puck-battle skills belying his body size. But, as I said, it was the 2023-24 version and they likely didn't codify it until the 2024-25 version.

As much as I want to give the Canes credit for really turning it on in the third period, there were some of the laziest attempts I think I've ever seen in trying to get the puck out of the zone by the Sabres. Maybe they were gassed, maybe they didn't want to risk icing it... but the answer is never the softest pass possible to no one up the middle of the ice.

And I'd say they really need to gameplan and practice 6 on 5 empty net situations since it really accentuates their issues defensively... but they'd be practicing against themselves, the Sabres version of having the extra man, so they wouldn't actually learn anything.
