I like the Offspring. I have some CD's including that one. I even like Green Day to some degree. That said I don't look at 'punk' bands from the 90's on (even the better ones like Rancid) the same as I look at punk bands from the late 70's to late 80's and a main reason is there came a point of acceptability which kind of wrecks the whole idea of what punk rock was meant to be. I love the Dropkicks first album Do or die and after that they're good but it's a slow ride downhill to becoming a rock band. I mean I've seen them on stage with Bruce Springsteen. What's with that? But even some from the beginning like the Stranglers became pretty much rock bands too. IMO it's meant to be grimy music.....not overproduced....badly produced is even okay.....not always pleasant to the ear. Either absolutely irreverent and/or a critique of society, a government or the systems they create.

I remember when the Fear record came out and I have that too. After the Ramones they might have been the next band to get real national attention----them or Wendy O. Williams Plasmatics or the Dead Kennedys (at the time more for their name....it's not like they were selling tons of records or getting on SNL like Fear did). I never was a big fan of Fear but they were for sure over the top outrageous which is what they set out to be. Not giving a shit about anyone or anything was kind of their ticket to whatever success they ever had. It didn't last long but they shocked more than a few people.

Gang of Four were a post punk band out of Leeds University. There were a few other bands out of the same scene like the Mekons and Delta 5. It was at the time when Britains National Front was going full bore and there was a lot of gang violence going on at gigs. The beginning of Rock against Racism (RAR) and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).....around the same time the troubles going on in the North of Ireland. So there was a lot of political content in the lyrics of the time and Gang of Four came at things from a Marxist angle. They were an outstanding band. Married elements of punk rock with funk/disco and pub rock. Anyway Entertainment was their first lp and I still think it's one of best records that came out during that time period. They've been touring in the United States the last couple years. Jon King-the main vocalist and Hugo Burnham the drummer the only originals---though they had their second bassist Sara Lee for a while. Andrew Gill who'd always been the guitar player might have been the first Brit to die from covid or before anyone really knew what it was. He kind of ripped off the style of Wilko Johnson of Dr. Feelgood. It's a unique slashing rhythmic guitar attack. Replacing him has been ex-Slint guitarist David Pajo.

Big fan of Fugazi. I have the first two Bad Religion albums and some early Husker Du in vinyl.

Canceled Amazon Prime and Spotify Premium. Anyone here set up plex for music? How does it work? (I understand the technicals, but is it a nice interface/easy to use and search)

Want to start getting CDs again and ripping them. Have tons back home in California but can't get them yet so am starting fresh.

I've been all about this band for the last couple months now. I listened to them in passing maybe a year ago and just moved on. Maybe it was being in the dumps over some girl at the start of last month that made my brain dig up anything as a distraction, but I sure am glad my brain spat this band back out at me. I haven't been able to bring myself to listen to any of their other albums (aside from one playthrough of their 2nd album) because I'm so enamored with every song on this album right now. Finding bands like this reminds me that there is still worthwhile music being made and it's not all just the top40 slop that ends up on grocery store playlists.

Funny enough they just joined up with another recent, heavy favorite of mine (Fontaines DC) as a fill-in for the original opener who dropped out of the tour. If they stick around to the US leg of this tour, I'm going to move heaven and earth to see them.

Crass had issues right off with record pressing plants refusing to press their records.....and so they learned how to do it themselves. And lots of bands from back in that time got their records through them. They also use to rent out venues for gigs and offer free soup to whoever came. They are the first anarchy-punk band and will inspire a bunch of bands including The Subhumans, The Mob, Rudimentary Peni, Flock of Pink Indians, Conflict, Discharge and even Chumbawamba. I think I may have mentioned that a week or so ago.

Stiff Little Fingers are one of the most revered of all punk rock bands. They are from Belfast in the North of Ireland. During their first iteration two were protestant and two were catholic which during the troubles people from those different religions didn't mix......at all. It was dangerous for anyone to do such. That record here broke the Independent record scene and made Rough Trade records into a real entity in the publishing world. It is as raw and angry a record as came out during the period of the late 70's and early 80's. They were out of the pub rock scene. Henry Cluney started hearing the Ramones and eventually convinced Jake Burns to take a punk rock direction. But as a band they'd been out and playing gigs before punk rock broke in the UK with the Pistols.

Dead Kennedy's second album. The Damned---another iconic band.

That list is terrible. Strokes were such a one trick pony. Number 8 should be banned for many many reasons.

I listened to the whole thing today.

It takes a long time to really place an album, especially with the type of content they put out, but it has the potential to end up in my top 5.

Broken Man is the only track where I was like "this is fine." Everything else is a banger. The album doesn't exhale for almost 70 minutes.

Got all those in vinyl. The Zen Arcade might be a bit wrecked though. X's first few albums were with the Doors Ray Manzarek. Billy Zoom--X's guitar player is in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame which IMO is a better HOF than the R&R just for being more obscure and because of it being specific to an originating genre. That was just because he was a great musician. Had nothing to do with records sold.

Bad Brains is the best American hardcore punk band ever. That's their first and best record. It came out on and for a decade or two could only be found on ROIR cassette and I burned through a couple of them. Now I have it in vinyl.

As for Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures.....it's unique. There was nothing really like it then. Now and again I'll listen to it and I've noodled about on the guitar with a couple of their songs but the death vibe throughout their recordings can get a bit wearing for me. It's not something I need to listen to a lot. It becomes a downer if I do. Of Manchester bands of that era I prefer The Fall. I really do. There was nothing like them either---not really even up to now.
