What, in your opinion, is the closest measurable proxy to identify:

A) Goals Against that are completely undefended, whether that means breakaway goals, passes that open up clear lanes to the net where no defender is impacting the play, and other situations where it is “more or less” the shooter vs. The goaltender

B) Shots Against/ Sv % vs. “Undefended” Shooters — maybe shots that there is no defender within a stick length of the shooter, or no defender in the lane between the shooter and the net?

Is there any way to get close to measuring this type of scenario, and which goaltenders do best/worst in it? And which teams/team defences expose themselves to these types of events most often?

Is this simply not measurable with currently available/tracked data or is there something similar/close?

I think you’re looking to find out, for goalies, how good they are at bailing out their teams, and for teams, how bad they are at leaving their goalies out to dry.

If you really want to go deep into it, I think this might get you a proxy for the second one.

On the HF Devils sub forum, there is a thread “Stoppable goals against review thread” or something similar. Bleedred has been judging every single goal against for the last several seasons to see if the goal against has been stoppable (a mistake by the goalie) or unstoppable (mistakes by the defense). You could run the analysis to see unstoppable goal against rates by team over time which might give you a proxy for what you’re looking for.

Also, between GSAA and GSAx, I'd pick the latter, which even Google's A.I. prefers...

Goals Saved Above Average (GSAA) and Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) are both goalie metrics in hockey that compare a goalie's performance to their league and team. GSAx is considered a more accurate measure because it accounts for shot quality.

Would probably be tough without having access to proprietary (and manually tracked) microstats. I know Clear Sight Analytics tracks some of the kinds of things you're asking about here (breakaways, unscreened shots) but to get full access to their data you'd have to probably work for an NHL team or pay them a boatload of money.
