“It could go to $9M… Sign Knies first and see what’s leftover… because he’s going to get offer sheeted.”

Choose 2 of 3

  1. Knies
  2. marner
  3. Tavares

And wrt that projected Cap ... maybe put the breaks on that.
I'll choose 2 of 3 on the basis that I believe two can be signed with little interference, leaving the third in limbo, not because I think he'll leave, but because I think the process represents the best possibility for protracted negotiation.

Knies: $7.5M x 5
Tavares: $6.5M x 4

If he were to sign an offer sheet would he then become public enemy #1 around here?
Ah. You almost got it across the line.

Hey, at one point, my avatar was Shanahan with a signature that read: Make Mine Marner (pre-draft). I think we can take our pick, when Nylander (my favourite for a while now) isn't the subject of tired caricatures, but I get your implication.

And for the record: Nah. He wouldn't be public enemy #1, and I think in large part because the perception might be, losing Knies to sign Marner, a decision made possible by Shanahan.

I think the "he" is well and truly grounded as a "they".

Stupid take as per usual on these types of podcasts but the leafs should have wrapped this up a long time ago.

Who signed an offer sheet and then became public enemy #1?

I wouldn't care but would be pretty pissed if we lose him.

Agreed. I’m pretty sure no leaf ever signed or received and offer sheet……..it’s just the bogey man in the closet some people like to let out occasionally

Well except for the one who posts here. He actually started it all. Lol

Nylund became the first NHL player to change teams via free agency requiring compensation when he left the Maple Leafs after signing an offer sheet with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1986.

I think a 5x5 was wholly possible and realistic at the start of this year. Now? Not so sure.
That ship sailed a long time ago, I think.

If I was him, I'd be looking at signing a 3-year bridge deal to coincide with Matthews' extension expiring - go 3 years playing with Auston, and with the cap going up, sail into negotiations with a huge about of leverage.

If I'm the Leafs, I'm 100% trying to hit the 8-year homer, even if it comes at a slight overpay.

There’s a ton of comparables for this not to get crazy, you have Guenther, you have Boldy, you have Beniers, you have Mercer, you have Byfield, you have McTavish
if you want to figure out his $$ value, which of the above players if offered straight up for Knies would you make the deal?

This kid keeps getting better and better .. lock him up for 8 years .. it is da smart choice long term for team .. he is going to be one of top NHL power wingers for next 8 years .. i would make him my #1 priority before Mitch and JT .. Knies 1st Mitch 2nd and then JT last on pecking order .. and Mitch I would not sign for 8 years as he won't make it that long

Can we please stay grounded a bit here? I get it that Knies is looking great but when you have 34 and 16 feeding you the puck and driving the play you're gonna be in a very, very good spot to produce.

We can't just keep overhyping players beyond what they are and then paying them as such. He's shooting almost 20% - it's not gonna stay that way, even with him getting better.

Knies has evolved quite a lot these last couple months but he's far from a perfect player.

Knies is becoming the leader of this team.
Call out team for being soft the turns his words into action .
Something the other core players wouldn't say and wouldn't back it up.
I hope McMann can bring out his inne Knies.
I want all our young players to follow his lead..

Better that than letting them get offer sheeted. A still bitter Oilers fan here.
If you're the Leafs don't get Hollowayed, lock that young man up.
If i were running the Oilers at the time I would have let Broberg leave no problem, but would have tried to retain Holloway. At the time i thought the Blues overpaid a bit...boy was i wrong. However, some of this pile-on-the-Oilers stuff is a little bit hindsight-y because of how Holloway has exceeded expectations IMO. Still should have tried to retain him though...#97 and #29 with forward depth behind them is a terrifying thought for someone who isn't particularly a fan of the Oilers like myself lol.

I wouldn't trade Knies for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd of unknown pick location slots, so I'd match anything in that range. 2 1sts is when it gets prohibitive for both parties and I see no chance of another team offering something in that range because they'd be overpaying him. Obviously, if someone is hilariously stupid and drunk enough to offer 4 1sts compensation you laugh, send Knies to the airport and send that other Benning-esque GM a gift basket every year. But that is 100% not happening.

EDIT: Thanks for coming here and being cool.

Does it ever feel like our media is the only one who throws out the biggest number possible for our players every single time? Never hear shit about Marco Rossi and his nearly 25, 60 points asking for 9 million or Vilardi, or Coronato....

It’s so annoying that on the broadcasts when guys are playing well they can’t wait to get their gleeful comments in about how much money he’s going to get. Saw it again regarding Knies last night with I believe it was Colby Armstrong
