Speculation: “200 ft Scoring Player” to STL

Yesterday in his end of season press conference, Doug Armstrong said he would like to get another “200 foot scoring player” this summer. I can look up the pending UFA list as well as anyone but what would be some potential trade options?

I’ll note the Blues are pretty loaded at wing but weaker at C. While the phrase he used is pretty vague, I’d say he’s most likely looking for a 2C. Someone to push Schenn to 3C or the wing. Or someone to push Sundqvist out of 3C and challenge Schenn for 2C at the very least.

Offensive minded forward (ideally a C), plays a good two-way game.
Garland?

I think we need to throw the gauntlet at Anaheim for Mason McTavish, he plays the way the Blues do. He would compliment the youth we have as a #2 center behind Thomas perfectly. Dvorsky, Stancl, 1st, that’s a haul.

McTavish would be great but unless there’s a big contract dispute, I can’t really see them wanting to move him.

They have Carlsson as well but what’d that leave as their 2C? Ryan Strome? With Dvorsky coming a year or two later…maybe.

Problem is the ducks don’t need any more young talent or picks now. Seems they are likely to be pushing to join the ranks of playoff teams next year.

Reactions: Bye Bye Blueston
Army tends to be purposeful in what he says. He has couple targets in mind. Whether he is aiming for Larkin or pinto or Mercer or Bennett or whomever, he has someone in his crosshairs. May not be able to pull it off, but I wouldn’t put it past him. Depending on the target, blues have fair amount of ammunition.
This is true. We can all say “just about every team wants a 2C” but I agree - he clearly has a couple targets in mind but is being purposely vague to not tip his hand and to provide himself some wiggle room.

He did reportedly go after Josh Norris before he was sent to Buffalo. I’ve always liked Pinto but he had a relatively down year. Not sure why.

But just trying to gauge who some of these potential targets might be. You’re right in that the Blues have a ton of ammo. They’re in a similar spot as 2018 when they had Thomas, Kyrou and Thompson as prospects and sacrificed one to bring in ROR.

When NHL GMs get too obsessed with big size players and height. 200 ft player is same size as godzilla.

Another guy that could be a target is Zacha. He had his best year under Monty, has 2 years left which tracks with comment Army made at presser, and fits age range. He is miscast as 1c, but could be nice fit here as 2c.

Wasn’t Lindholm more their 1C?

Both are probably better slotted in at 2C but whatever. He’d probably be a good target.

Career high in points this year?

You can't call Pinto a 2C till he starts showing more offensive chops. He will be 25 yo next November and his career high is 37 points. Good player, but you need more than that out of your 2C.

He’d be more of a 3C to push Sunny out.

I think the ideal scenario is to acquire a 2C to push Schenn down to 3C and to push Sunny out…but keeping Schenn at 2C (he’s slowing down but he did still score 50 pts this season and was excellent with both Holloway and Kyrou as his wings), adding a 3C and then Sunny moving to RW would still be an upgrade.

Is he available? Most everyone probably is ... 'if' the deal is too good to pass up. However the Ducks have no need for quantity of players coming back (even good prospects) & they're almost ready to run/are near the end of the rebuild so picks that won't show up for 3-4 years is pretty much a nonstarter too.

So that leaves hockey trades & to get PV to budge on McT it's going to hurt, period. Potentially he could be packaged with one of the up & coming Dmen that Anaheim has a plethora of, but that will only happen if the return is a truly elite player who fits into the upcoming window. Beyond that though the Ducks have no reason to make a deal for McT right now.

(although I do agree that he'd be a good fit in StL from what I've seen of their games/system)
