CMT has ordered a script from “Varsity Blues†writer W. Peter Iliff, E! News has confirmed. The project is still incredibly early in development, but that just means you have more time to get your friends together.

The original 1999 film features James Van Der Beek as a back-up quarterback who has to take the reigns after the team’s star player is injured. If that’s not enough pressure, he is also sparring with his football-obsessed dad and abusive coach. “Varsity Blues†also stars Paul Walker as the injured QB, Ali Larter as his girlfriend and Jon Voight as the coach.

I know this show - it's called Friday Night Lights - and nothing will top that

Clear eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose

Unless they take on a totally different tone or perspective, this will always be the comparison I make.

I can't recommend this enough. Season One was nearly perfect. Ignoring Season Two, you can't make a show based around high school football better than Friday Night Lights.
