I was pleased when the Oil signed Hyman (after a great move by Holland to free up most of Lucic's salary and get him off the team). That said...

I did not expect Hyman, 2-3 years later, to put 70 NHL goals in one season.

Just think, Leafs thought he wasn't worth paying 5mil for.
Hard to believe a team that threw money around on players like Murray, Muzzin, Kampt, not to mention the big 4 could not ante up on a 2 way stud player that would go on to score 70 goals this year. Its not like he didn’t produce in Toronto either, his last 2 seasons. 36 goals in 94 games +32
In a secondary role. Good on Edmonton for using and appreciating his talents to let him further succeed. So happy for Hyman. He deserves all the recognition he is getting now.

Let's not pretend Hyman was a 50 goal guy just waiting to burst out. He was a 40 point guy even with Matthews on his line at times. Matthews is not a great playmaker and isn't the type to make his linemates better per se, but McDavid is the epitome of that. He got 100 assists this year, the most anyone has gotten in a season in 33 years. Someone had to be the beneficiary of that. Granted, Hyman does the right sort of things to be on McDavid's line, it is a good compliment, but he is still a 40 point guy even so much as not being on McDavid's line. I don't think we should pretend they let a guy like this go and he was just a 54 goal man waiting to burst out!

True but also the chemistry is just perfect, it is the best case scenario for both Hyman and McDavid. McDavid needs that work horse, the guy that will get the puck, be strong on his stick and get to the net and scoring areas. How many guys have played with McDavid ? None have done what Hyman is doing. They just complement each other perfectly.

He was never going to reach his potential with a shoot first Center like Matthews, sometimes things are just a blessing in disguise. His first choice was to stay, he was bummed to have to go, now he's 1 game away from helping his team win it all.

He had 33 points in 43 games his final year in Toronto, and had 37 points in 51 games the prior year. That's all without top PP unit minutes.

While obviously he's flourished even more with Edmonton, calling him a "40 point guy" in Toronto isn't accurate. It was clear he was becoming more than that even before he left.

In addition to being a 2 way stud. In a way he is Edmonton’s Mark Stone for VGK cup run last year. Except he has out goaled even Stone these playoffs. Hyman was +32 in 94 games in his last 2 seasons. Not an easy task when one of your Center’s is likely to be a 5 on 5 liability like Tavares is.

I watched a ton of Leaf games. I said it from the start at how well Hyman would fit into Edmonton. Hyman does all of the right things to get into positions to execute

Because Matthews isn't a team player, or a winner. He just just wants to score goals, get paid, get endorsements, get paid more and golf.

He cares about respect in the handshake line then golfing, not about winning.
