3 embarrassing moments? Are we talking per season? We got endless moments like that.

3 that come to mind, since becoming a fan:

1. The entire 1998-2004 dark ages period. Signing and trading for all the big names only to miss the playoffs every year. Lindros, Fleury, Holik, Bure, Carter, Messier part 2, LaFontaine, etc etc

2. The 2021 Tom Wilson incident and subsequent fallout.

3. Drafting Hugh Jessiman in the stacked 2003 draft.

- Assistant GM Randy Lee being accused of sexual harassment against a minor male when he was responsible for the young players in the organization. Organization pays for his lawyers and doesn’t suspend him when information is made public.

Forgot about this one. I remember reading insinuations at the time that Lee was just joking around and the guy took it way too seriously. But just now reading the full story… yikes.

btw 2 minor corrections: he wasn’t just accused he plead guilty, and the guy was 19, so not an underage minor. Gross either way.

The Oilers really have some doozies from the summer of 2006 until the McDavid draft.

Nothing encompasses the horror and embarrassment of that decade more than this press conference. To set the stage, Kevin Lowe had just hired Craig MacTavish as the GM, who had never had any management experience and couldn’t find a job anywhere else in the league as a coach, while also bringing back Scott Howson after he had completely sewered the Blue Jackets organization.



The arrogance on display in this three minutes is astounding.

Blaming the failures of the organization on the successes they had in the 80s, saying it’s all cyclical.

2. Sharkie gets stuck repelling from the ceiling causing a 15 minute delay
3. 10 goals given up in B2B games is pretty awful; also first team in NHL history to open B2B seasons with 9 straight losses.

Drafting Teemu Riihijarvi with the 12th overall pick in the 1995 draft was pretty embarrassing.

Drafting Andrei kostitsyn over multiple players that could have made a huge difference for our organization. Even at the time I was pissed and mystified

I considered Hyman refusing to sign with the team here, but given that he shit the bed in the SCF against the Panthers, I'd say that one feels pretty good right now.

- Trading Mark Stone for Erik Brannstrom and Dorion calling it a great day, smiling like an idiot during the presser.

- Sending down Matt Murray the year he signed a 24M contract.

- The Uber incident featuring Chris Wideman and Matt Duchene where they called the assistant coach an idiot.

- Eugene Melnyk threatening to fans to move the team out of Ottawa at the outdoor game on national broadcast.

- Melnyk having an interview with Mark Borowiecki to discuss “the plan”.

- Dorion’s “Year’s of unparalleled success”

Scott Niedermayer leaving was arguably worse, but both of these happened when it wasn't clear (at the time, at least) that Lou had lost it. The first two moments were emblematic of the decade or so where things were total shit. The third one needs no further explanation.
