Tampa has upgraded its team twice before winning a cup.

Coleman + Goodrow in 2020. Savard in 2021.

Good teams need to improve their roster at the deadline because it becomes an arms race with other contenders. A team that looks good right now begins to seem average when they face upgraded teams in the playoffs.

I agree marginal improvements are a bad idea. No more Foligno and Nash type players. They should go big with whatever addition they make.

Such good pickups too. And didn't they also land both JT Miller and McDonaugh in a previous TDL deal?

i'd like to know what the cost would be for Klingberg or Manson. For fowards? I'm seeing 1-2 posts in regards to Giroux. Cost probably pretty steep though.

Damien Cox is an idiot and has always been an idiot.

Not quite as bad as Steve Simmons but an idiot nonetheless.

I'm not a violent man but Cox and Simmons both have punchable faces. They could say nothing and just the fact they have those faces, instantly creates an instinct to punch ... smug, douchy, arrogant, punchable ...

Cox who admits he is nothing more than a tennis guy... feels his opinion on everything sport is worthy of being behind a pay wall... douchhhhhhhhhhhhy ... btw there are 1, 294, 393, 568 people I would go to for their opinion on tennis before I ever went to Cox.

Reactions: JT AM da real deal
I'd only add on the back end, and only if the price is right.

Perhaps it's time to sell high on Mikheyev? I'd hate to lose his speed, but his value will never be higher.

Carson Soucy and a 4C that can play up the lineup, maybe Girgensons for a rental +1, Larsson or Paul for a pure rental

I think he’s prolly more valuable to the Leafs playoff run than what he’d return.
Despite his absence of offence in the po’s to date.

Fair, though his value has never been higher and he's publicly asked to be moved at points.

He's UFA this offseason and I don't see the Leafs being able to retain him, even if he wanted to come back.

If we can address a need for an asset that will be gone most likely, it's something I hope is considered.

Good points, but hard to see the team move an important piece approaching the playoffs.
If they were on the outside looking in, sure, sell ‘em all.

When I think of this team going into the playoffs with 3 of Holl, Dermott, Liljegren and Sandin taking up 3 defense spots any hope I have that this could be the year gets quickly squashed.

At the same time, I don't think giving up any significant assets is worth it. If the blueline was deep and veteran-heavy already I'd be more open to going for a differece-maker like Chychrun to put them over the top. Right now though, too many holes to fill and too late to patch them all.*

(* If Dubas really wanted to address the blue line's lack of experience/consistency the off-season is the time to do it - or earlier in the season at least. I don't feel 20-25 games is enough time for a top 4-type defencemen to fit in with a new team before the playoffs.)

I would like to add a top 4 d-man with liljegren being the odd man out (7th d-man). Holl and Sandin have played really well together over the past few games and getting a legit top 4 to pair with muzzin will balance our d core imo. Not sure which defensemen to trade for, but i won't be upset to give up a first, liljegren and + for jakob chychrun.

I don't really understand the fascination with Chiarot. He is really just A Guy.

I think the biggest need is another quality top-four defenceman. But the ones with term will be very expensive, and the other options are all flawed. A guy like Josh Manson is still living off the reputation of a couple of years ago...he has slowed down and declined. Klingberg would fit with how the Leafs play, but isn't someone to take tough matchups and would be relegated to PP2, diminishing his utility. I like Severson, and he has another year left, but that doesn't introduce more cap complications.

The Leafs have a lot of forward depth. I don't think they need an addition there. If it's a forward they add, it needs to be a very high-end player (like a Miller or Hertl), but again, that's going to be very expensive.

Recency bias. He was really good last year in the playoffs

Giroux and Phil Kessel.

Before anyone freaks out, yes, I know we need a defenceman, but no one available seems that interesting. It's a wish list, not a well researched and supported business pitch. I want to see Giroux and or Kessel!

I really like the idea of Giroux.

It's going to be Luke Schenn. Not terrible. Servicable 7th man if someone goes down.

By no means gamechanging.

I am going all in and going after Millet and Murphy.

If Dubas wants to go down with the core than why would he care the cupboards are empty if it fails?

Recency bias. He was really good last year in the playoffs

He wasn't "really good". He was a guy that blocked shots when he needed to, watched Carey Price make a lot of saves, and guys like Toffoli and Caufield get some timely goals. He had the worst xG% among Canadiens defensemen in the playoffs, except for Jon Merril.

Petry and Weber were the guys that drove the team. It's shocking how bad Chiarot's xG% was despite being next to Weber for the most part (who had an xG% of 52.5)

Saying "recency bias" is not a counter-argument when you haven't provided any evidence.

It sure is when you are lazy! His name gets tossed around a lot an people want to jump on board.

Yes, Price did bail him out but he was a physical presence who did a good job in some tough matchups. He brings very little offense and therefore his ×GF will suffer.

It's the same reason Muzzins isnt always the greatest.

Miller would be a huge add, especially if Vancouver were to retain 50% of his salary.

Kerfoot, Robertson, 2023 1st. Hefty price but at least we’d have him for 2 playoff runs at a minimum.

I get improving the Team but Kerfoot is a very popular player in the room.

Very popular amongst our players and coaching staff, I don’t see it happening but in order to get quality you’ll have to give up quality. Miller would be a huge boost though.
