Trade deadline always makes me nervous as the GM mortgages the future and empties the draft pick cupboard.
Nick Foligno, Riley Nash, David Rittich, and Ben Hutton was last years TD haul and it left the Leafs with only 3 draft picks and virtually no return on investment.
Leafs 3rd, 4th, 5th 6th and possibly 7th are already dealt away from this 2022 draft leaving only Leafs 1st and 2nd standing at present.
Hopefully the same mistakes will not be made again, and if they do deal a high pick away again its for a better return in the present and some residual value in the future.
Leafs really need a top 4/2nd pairing Dman that can play big minutes and push Holl into the bottom pairing is my top wish list request to hopefully go far in the playoffs this year.
Only thing on my list is no stupid trades, and no major assets (1st, 2nd, notable prospects) for rentals.
Could care less if we do nothing as a result, but there are some smart moves we can make to help out the team without making a stupid trade.
They could just run it & go small with some cheap depth adds, preferably with term or pending RFA like Luke Schenn, Lauzon, Weatherby
(Luke Schenn, Pateryn, Braun, Lauzon...)
(Weatherby, Paul, Johansson...)
They definitely shouldn't be going all in like they did this past TDL
So you don't want to get better
Are you hoping for another trade deadline like last year?
NHL trade deadline winners, losers
In case you didn't know, now you do: the Maple Leafs are all in.
GM Kyle Dubas snagged forward depth (Stefan Noesen, Riley Nash, Antti Suomela), defensive depth (Ben Hutton), goaltending depth (David Rittich) and a versatile veteran forward who not only has a strong defensive game but can put the puck in the net no matter where he plays in the lineup (Nick Foligno).
The cost a 1st, 2 x 3rd, 2 x 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th round draft picks.
If that is the cost, and that the return, then doing nothing might be the preferable outcome.![]()
