It’s the summer of 2023 and your favourite NHL has hired you as the GM. its a deep draft with franchise prospects available. You have the #1 overall pick and the consensus top 5 in the draft all 18 yr olds are Joe Sakic, Eric Lindros, Connor Mcdavid, Nick Lidstrom and Alexander Ovechkin.

This isn’t who you think had the best career, but who you would draft as an 18 yr old into your organization.

Because you said its for the 2023 draft I didn't have to even think about anyone but McDavid. Lindros and Sakic would have struggled too much with the speed of the game.
Lidstrom #2.

20 years ago I say Lindros #1 though.

McDavid is a very easy pick here for me.

Sakic had a fantastic career - but McDavid is a clear tier up, not close

Lindros - too many question marks with him despite insane potential. In an absolute perfect storm where nothing goes wrong scenario - there's a chance Lindros could have the type of career McDavid is having. It's just way more of a slam dunk with McDavid, so no reason to pass him

Lidstrom - Lidstrom is great, and for career value and consistency he's hard to beat - but McDavid is simply a higher profile player. Better and more impactful.

Ovechkin is the only question mark. But in the end - C > W. Also - Ovechkin's peak was great, but didn't last very long. McDavid is proving to have a peak lasting quite a bit longer so far.

Depends if its what we know now or what they where at draft day. At draft day I believe Lindros had the most hype. Also hard to judge Lindros as he had so many injuries. Cant expect him to get aken out as he was during his time today as the NHL have way less dirty hits. He could be the best of the bunch without his injury history,

The main case for Lidstrom is probably how many cups he got with the Wings, but he also played on a very stacked team that only had a few other stacked teams to compete with. Still you could argue that he might be the best player to win a cup with while not necessarily being as good as the rest as he could log 30 mins a night in his prime. McDavid might be the best of the bunch, but in the end would still choose Ovechkin just because he is Ovechkin while he necessarily isnt the best of the bunch his prime was insane and after that just follow his chase for 892.

I could try and make a case for each, but it's McDavid. Especially since you said it's all happening in 2023. The current NHL game is made for McDavid.

Considering Lidrstrom was drafted 53rd overall - pretty sure it's based on what we know today lol

If it was at draft day - I'd 100% agree it was Lindros, and not even close. The only prospect in history who possibly had more hype than Lindros was Lemieux, but even there I'm 50/50 on who had more insane pre-draft hype.

Totally agree and yes, the question is with regards to what you know today. Also factor in your drafting l8ndros in 2023 not in the 90’s. So it’s likely he has a better longer career as headshots are not as prevelent

McDavid but without injury Lindros will be a very close call for me because of the way he can dominate with is hockey sense and mean streak. A mix of a mini Mario Lemieux in skill and Mike Tyson in mentality, a true unicorn nobody can stop him playing by the rules but Scott Stevens didn't read the rules and make is own ...

Nobody not name Orr can compete in production with a center who make is linemate better ...

I think if you give Lindros a perfectly healthy career - he still ends up slightly worst than what McDavid is. And that's absolute best case scenario for him - good chance since he was so injury prone, he'd still get injuries and do quite a bit worst then that, even in 2023

Considering every team in the league passed multiple times on 18 year old Lidstrom, I'd say he's out.
Lindros was known to be reckless even at 18, he was just bigger than everyone, that's not the case any more.
Sakic wasn't really expected to be a massive game changer like Ovechkin or McDavid, that's why 14 teams passed on him.

I think McDavid is the perfect player for today's game though so I'd take him

Knowing what we know, McDavid. Based on pre-draft scouting reports, I still think Lindros would have been selected over these guys. He was the next Lemeiux. The next Gretzky. A sure shot superstar and most experts thought he was going to be among the top players of all time. Concussions derailed that train sadly, but the hype for Lindros was probably the biggest for any prospect ever.
