Was he playing that poorly down in Hershey? Do they have some of these prospects coming to take his place? Need to free money for another move?

Genuinely interested about this. Seems random.

Generally speaking, what usually leads to this?
He was fine but not great in Hershey and he'd probably be the 11th (?) defenseman on the Caps' depth chart right now. The money between the AHL and Europe isn't that different and in some cases is even better. Especially for the Euro guys, if you're going to make <$100k and ride the bus it's nicer to do it back home.

For the org, it frees up a roster slot and even if it hurts Hershey in the short run, it's better long-term to not keep guys who don't want to be there.

He came over to try and play his way to the NHL. The Caps have carried the same eight defensemen all year and have avoided major injuries at the position, though. He'd likely rather play at home than in the AHL, and teams usually understand the impetus for those guys to come over. When the NHL openings aren't there, most teams try to be understanding and release veteran Europeans from their contracts. So the result is mutual contract termination.

The Caps have been riding their 50-contract limit pretty close all year, so they likely don't mind additional flexibility heading into the trade deadline.

Definitely will be a late bloomer and will dominate fantasy hockey leagues abound within 2 years.

Islanders should try sign him, they need defense

Hardy Haman Aktell
His name is my name to.
Whenever we go out,
The people scream and shout
Hardy! Haman! Aktell!

This is both hilarious and factually accurate.

It's kinda disappointing, I actually think/thought he could play in this league. His few games he played here last year were pretty good, I thought he was better then Edmundson and Alexyev (at least at the start) but this year, with them picking up Chychurn, the left side is seemingly locked down for the foreseeable future with Chych, Fehervary, and Sandin.
