I’m really not sure. He might’ve been on the Avs roster long enough that he can’t
Wait what? He’s going to AHL

Edit*
Can we get a fact check on Muffins post, I’m out right now

Teams re-claiming guys they waived can send them back to the AHL immediately.
Not always true.

1. If another team put in a claim, they have to go through waivers again to go down. We can assume no other team did since Jets are top of the league.

2. I believe Kahkonen was on the Avs roster for the exact amount of time needed for Winnipeg to have to waive him again to send him down. If so then Avs can claim him and send him down immediately, as there seems to be no other teams who will put in a claim and he hasn't been on the Jets roster for over a month.

Teams re-claiming a player can only send them to the minors iff they are the only team to put in a claim

IN THEORY: If anyone after Winnipeg put in an (unsuccessful) claim, he will require waivers for WPG to send him down. (Though, in this case there is no one after WPG in waiver priority, meaning everyone else did pass)

There is no time period requirement or reprieve. That only comes after a player clears waivers.

Is there not a rule where if the player is on the new teams' roster for over a month the whole "original waiving team" rule goes out the window?

EDIT: Apparently not.

The fact that he's loaned to the AHL instead of assigned there tells me they can't directly assign him to the AHL and has to be waived again which means if the Avs put in a claim they can assign him to the AHL if no other team puts in a claim right?

A loan and assignment are the same thing for the purposes of the CBA

If this was a temporary assignment meant to bypass the waiver system it would be called a "conditioning" loan/stint, but I can't imagine Kahkonen would qualify for one at this point

The Avs did the loan him to the AHL already. Why would they go through the trouble of loaning him when they can just assign him there?

Yes, Colorado used a conditioning assignment on him because he was inactive waiting for visa paperwork to be done, meaning he couldn't play or practice with the team, so once that cleared, he got a stint in the AHL, bypassing waivers, to get some icetime in.

This time there is no injury or reason for him to be unable to play so Winnipeg won't be able to conditioning stint him.
But they can loan him to the AHL without waivers, anyway (CBA 13.22)
