WP: Lab-grown meat is in your future, and it may be healthier than the real stuff

Scientists and businesses working full steam to produce lab-created meat claim it will be healthier than conventional meat and more environmentally friendly. But how much can they improve on old-school pork or beef?

In August 2013, a team of Dutch scientists showed off their lab-grown burger (cost: $330,000) and even provided a taste test. Two months ago, the American company Memphis Meats fried the first-ever lab meatball (cost: $18,000 per pound). Those who have tasted these items say they barely differ from the real deal.

Cure cancer or make fake burger... Hmmmm...

Science is a joke.

And fake bacon tastes awful.

I imagine some vegans will eat it and others won't. Some meat eaters won't eat it because they're opposed to GMOs. Some won't because they find it weird.

As someone who eats very little meat because of the environmental impact of meat production, I'm wholly in favour of this. I assume we'll eventually have a mix of varieties. Some will essentially be McDonald's meat, while others will be as close to organic as you can get.

I think people are understating how important this is.

One standard fast food burger requires 660 gallons of water to make (feed/cow).

This is a step in the right direction to stop the water crisis and stop desertification.

If you don't switch from eating meat to this pseudo meat (once it's proven to be healthy/is as cheap as real meat), you'll actively be harming the environment.

For once, I'm with TJ.

Some meat eaters won't eat it because they're opposed to GMOs.

As far as I can tell, there's no GMO involved here.

Other things missing: antibiotics, growth hormones, processing-related contamination, clearcutting of rainforests, mass production of feed grain, methane and other climate-changing emissions, and dead animals.

Fear of science will be the most common reason to reject it.
