Realistically, you can't gut the entire core in one shot.

I would start this year with removing Marner + Tavares. You add assets using the money they leave behind and put a different look around Matthews, Nylander and Knies.

One wild card I could see them looking into beyond Marner and Taveres would be getting Rielly to waive. It sucks considering the good he's done in years past but the game is slipping away from him now.

Perhaps the only way to get Matthews to leave is to bench him next game.

Now for any other "star" player with any sense of pride that would be the ultimate insult and in a rage at the news they're not playing they'd demand a trade.

Auston though? He's got it so good here with all the commercials and endorsements I could see him wanting to stay. He'd pout about it but the dollar signs would keep him here.

I’d be open to trading him for sure. But I’m not sure I’d want the current front office handling that trade. They need to be gutted, not a 10th chance to fix their mistake.

It depends on if he is injured or not. He doesn't seem to be playing with pride. The old Matthews was proud and took exception to losing, he took it personal, he seems to have lost that.

If it is an injury issue which might be corrected with surgery ok, get it fixed this offseason or better yet, rise above it in Game 6 and 7.

If he is healthy, well, I see a player who is more like Marner than Knies. Soft and afraid, lacking the pride to overcome the opponent.

There is a reason Marchand loves beating the Leafs, they simply let him. That's what is comes down to.

That's still the Dubas blueprint, the core is collectively too soft and he didn't admit he was wrong until the very end, just before he got shit-canned.

100% true, this guy's lack of give a shit is the absolute worst thing you can tie a C to. He's supposed to be leading and setting the tone, he's even worse than Tavares was.
Of all the so called superstars in hockey, he is the second easiest to neutralize. The first is Mitchy.
There has always been something about AM that he doesn't show, nobody knows him off ice, nobody knows or even speculats about what an injury might be, or if he had surgery last summer etc. His life off ice is protected, looks like a goof in bank commercial,.
His personna that his handlers present is not real.

Marner gets all the greed, selfish stuff, but look at this guy’s contracts. Grinded every penny, took it all up front, didn’t give much UFA years, went to UFA at TWENTY SIX, maxed out again, highest in league. Every cent, every bit of leverage, every time. This guy has set the stage for me first contracts, and has never delivered anything, he’s a disgrace to the C actually. Tre gave him the C to make him more accountable, a way of saying this is your team, deliver…he betrayed that confidence again. Guys have won cups with broken legs, I don’t want to hear about his little injury that allows him to play PK, plus 20 a night for months, give me a break. His injury is lack of desire and heart. You aren’t winning with guy, so why wouldn’t you trade him and rebuild with the assets? He’s a candy ass.

I think if Marner doesn’t re-sign, that might be the trigger for Matthews to approach management for a trade.

If Marner leaves, Matthews’ emotional security blanket leaves. In essence, it’s an instance where three siblings that were divided into a 2 vs 1 dynamic, becomes 1 vs 1.

I think looking over at Nylander, without Marner in the room, sets up a different uncomfortable dynamic for Matthews’ ego.

And as we’ve come to understand profoundly, Papi appears to have particular ownership rights to a level of comfort that’s non-negotiable.

I think Reilly’s an appropriate start.

Value is high? He just had the worst season of his career and has looked like dog water in the playoffs (even compared to all the other playoffs hes looked like dog water in)

That’s why I put it in quotations. His value is not high but there’s a possibility that’s as high as it gets. Why is this so hard to understand?
