Would you shell out for a WNHL?

Watching the Olympics, it's clear that a premier Women's League needs to attempt to be formed. If only for the sake of improving the Olympics. I think, if there were a WNHL where some of these Swiss players can compete with and against the top players, the Swiss might beat or tie Finland.

So, here's my idea. You do it in the Summer, like the WNBA. You air the games on OLN (Yes, I know, not the best way) and you start out with teams in the original six cities, and you make ticket prices at least half of NHL ticket prices.

Would it have a shot in hell? If the WNBA can last a decade, could the WNHL have a chance?

No. It really wouldn't. For a number of reasons. Some not politically correct.

1. The NA sports market is dominated by males. Males are just not that interested in women's sport. Unfair? Yes.

2. The calibre if hockey would be extremely poor. I enjoy hockey. I would watch women's hockey. I would not pay anything close to junior league ticket prices to watch it though.

3. Unfair double standards. Full cages/visor, no contact, etc. This is not fun. Please do not question the full cage/visor point. I am not promoting playing without protecting your eyes. I'm promoting an increased vision of the ice and therefore increasing creativity and skill.

4. Money. I don't see a lot of sponsorship or local money being involved in a women's hockey league. We're still a decade or so off of that.

It's a sad catch-22. I want to see women's hockey succeed but I think of it as the ugly cousin to the hockey I know. Decreased talent and ability, slow and lacking power. I really hope that women have the chance to develop skills AND power. They should be able to play the game the way the majority enjoys it. I think they will someday.

If people would stop comparing women's hockey to men's hockey (a charge which I am guilty of) then we'd see improvements. Just let it develop and it'll be fine.

I would support the league just so the Women's Olympic Hockey would be competitive. I doubt there would be a big enough interest to keep the league afloat. Kinda like the US womens soccer leaugue (WUSA?)

Not in this lifetime.....never ever...snoozefest city!! :teach:

And nor for the WNBA or Women's soccer....all boring and lame...

I would never PAY to watch women's hockey unless I knew someone playing in it.

Seriously, I could watch better hockey at my local outdoor rink.

1. Did you not hear that over 60000 females play hockey in Canada. There's the people that go to those games right there.

2. *shakes head*

3. again *shakes head* There is contact. Try playing with women before you ever say that. I've gotten more broken bones, sore muscles, and bruises from playing with females then I have males.

4. You're right because the world is full of ignorant people like you in the corporate world

I don't know, if you put a team in NY, Toronto, Montreal, Boston, and Detroit. Maybe add Minnesota and Los Angeles just to give yourself a stretch to the west coast, I don't see it as that much of a risk.

I see it as something that could succeed in those cities.

I imagine if one day I had some daughters that liked hockey, I would take them to as many games as they wanted to see.

If it was just me, I would only really pay to see USA vs. Canada national teams, cause the games in which they compete in are pretty damn fun to watch.

Jeez don't take his responses so harshly, he's just stating his honest opinion. And on your comment number 3, i'm not sure how you've ever broken a bone playing hockey with girls. I'm even somewhat enjoy watching the olympics, but let's be real here, the only way your statement number 3 would be true is if the males you were playing with were 4 year old mites.

You would actually have to pay ME to watch a womens hockey game... Boring, awful, slow hockey.

high school provincials grade 12... going in on a breakaway and I got hauled down... slid into the goal post hard and broke my wrist. The only year I played with girls and that was the first year my high school had a hockey team. I grew up playing with boys and didn't break any bones. The bones I did break were in other sports I played growing up

It's obvious most of you have never seen the US or Canada or any NCAA team play in person.

You must have your manhood questioned a lot.

A WNHL would be like the WNBA. I wouldn't watch unless I was paid. Bigtime money too. Just too boring, no hitting, I don't mean this in a derogatory way, but the atleticism just isn't there.

First of all let me say that I would actually like to see a women's hockey league. It would be good for the sport in general and the Olympics (not these ones in particular) have proven that the talent is there.

But let's get one thing clear: the WNBA is a colossal failure. It's David Stern's (the comissioner of the NBA) pet project and he has had the NBA almost single handedly supporting it financially for the last 4 or 5 years. It was wildly popular for about a year and then people stopped caring in an epic way--you won't find more than a handful of people at the most important games anymore.

People care about basketball in the US. And women's college basketball is actually a very legitimate and well watched sport. And the league fell flat on it's face. Consider that before you want to start a women's hockey league in a country where few people care about hockey, nobody will have ever heard of any of the players and the parent league still has to focus on keeping itself above water before it can help a women's league stave off contraction.

It would be a doomed project from the start in America.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..

i wouldn't but Rosie O'Donnell probably would.

On the subject of having a league for chicks, i posted this in another thread but will put it here. What i would do is divide Canada into 3 teams(East, West and Ontario) and the US into 2 Teams(East and West). That there is 100 players who get to play in a tournament at a "high level" and would also lead to a lil more excitement because any one of those 5 teams could win.

Beyond that you invite 3-5 other woman hockey nations to join the tournament. The fact that the canadian and US teams are watered down a bit means that they won't blow out the lower level teams by as much, which might be helpful in the long run making those teams better.

I would also try to stay away from having the USA(full team) vs Canada(full team) all the time, save it for special occasions like the Olympics, so when they do play against eachother it has some meaning. As it stands now USA vs Canada in woman's hockey is like the Harlem Globetrotters vs the Washington Generals(in the sense they are the only 2 teams in the Globetrotters fictional league, although whenever one of those 2 teams plays any other country, they fill the role of the Globetorotters).

I'd rather watch AAA or Jr. A hockey to be quite honest. Although I support our Women in Torino - go kick some *** and keep pounding the competition.

Only losers complain about getting beaten...go figure.

There already is a league. That tells you how popular it is, most people are not even aware it exists.
