Would you keep Thornton, Marleau and Boyle if...

All three were to sign extensions in the offseason for a total of $12MM or less? And that all three players were to play in secondary positions. Meaning, Boyle would fall into the second pairing but still have time on the PP. Thornton would fall into the 3C spot and have time on the PP and Marleau could float in between the 2nd and 3rd lines. And also have some time on the PP/PK.

I think Marleau and Thornton can be effective players moving into their mid 30's and put up decent numbers (40-50 pts.). They have been pretty much injury free for most of their careers due to their playing style and I cant imagine that changing any time soon.

They would be nice complementary players to the players stepping up or coming onto the team; guys like Couture, Hertl, and Kuraly.

If Marleau and Thornton really loved SJ and wanted to finish their respective careers here they would be wise to get on board with this idea. If not, they should just waive their NMC over the summer and accept a trade to wherever Dougie can get maximum return. ;)

Your premise is impossible since there is no way they all sign for $12m, total pipe dream

so you want the better players on the team to step aside so the weaker players can become the go to guys on the team? smart recipe for success.:sarcasm:

I'd do it for 16 Million and would be happy. (DW will likely do it for 17+) 3 year deals for Marleau and Thornton, 1-2 years for Boyle.

Thornton for 5m

Marleau for 4.5

Boyle for 5m

Is more realistic.

I was going to say $15MM but I thought that may be too high. Boyle would be 38 going into a new contract and Marleau/Thornton would both be 35 going into the new deal. Tough to pay that kind of dough, especially with the shrinking of the salary cap. The only comparable would be Gonchar and Alfredsson's deals; Gonchar got $5.5M and Alfredsson got $4.8

That's about minimum I agree, and still unlikely.

In free agency, even at 35, some GM would give Thornton $7M+, bank on it.

sakic and roy

chara (34) and thomas

Sakic and Roy? Elite and generational talent, that was surrounded by Forsberg, Foote, Blake, Drury and oh, that other guy Ray Bourque :sarcasm:

The 2011 Bruins were carried by Thomas, no doubt about that. I always said that if Niemi played like Thomas or the way Quick did last year, the Sharks would have already celebrated a cup victory.

That is exactly why I ended my post with if Wilson cant get anything done at a reasonable price by July, he should be asking those two to waive their NMC to move them.

you honestly don't think 6 mil is good price for a 70+ point player? disregard age, because age has not hindered his play at all.

Its good but not great and yes I will look at age because 35+ contracts are scary. And if you're paying him that money, there is no way he is falling into a secondary position and you still have the same team but 2 years older. Rest assure, Thornton will be looking for a 3 year deal.

I don't believe his contract will be a 35+, he turns 35 after the contract starts... unless im crazy.

i think this is the grey area that the flyers were hoping they walked around with pronger lol.

because july 2nd is his bday, and he will have been signed on july 1st or earlier lol. but the season starts when he is 35.

I'm willing to bet it's gonna be $6 mil for Marleau and Thornton and $5 for Boyle. Don't really know what the terms would be like though.
