This team wouldn’t make the playoffs imo
So basically, they are the Habs. Would clearly miss the playoffs without play-ins or division realignment, and then beat the leafs in the playoffs anyway

But to answer, no. That team wouldn’t beat the leafs in a series. Gardiner - Barrie would be a hilarious pairing to watch though

Gardiner barrie is all I need to know

whether Andersen chokes a game or not, he better be ready to stop point blank after point blank shots cuz these guys are the masters of pizza tossing.

Offensively they have 1 line maybe two

and then yea they have Andersen in net

So all in all leafs in 7

Gardiner is on LTIR and hasn't played a game this year.

Gunnarsson retired at the end of last season.

Sparks is in the AHL and has played a total of three NHL games in the past three seasons.

Johnsson Kadri Hyman
Marchment Verhaeghe Brown
Martin Boyd Kapanen
Moore Boyle Barabanov/Ennis/JVR/Thornton

Gardiner Barrie
Gunnarsson Bogosian
Hutton Schenn/Ceci/Zaitsev

Andersen
Rittich/Sparks

Babcock
Smith
Hakstol

That line up would rival Montreal and Arizona for last place. Kudos for the attempt, but poor execution 0/10

Let's put some numbers on this.

I went through the GSVA cards and put together the best possible team of ex-leafs that I could find.

That's a bit of a cheat because verhaghe is strictly a winger in reality but whatever this is for fun.

On paper, though, even with kadri marchment verhaeghe having career years it's not all that close.

The ex-Leafs can compare in depth forwards and in net, but the top6 forwards and the dcorps aren't really close.

Damn, looks like a missed a few. Would be closer than I initially thought. Remember people, keywords in this post are ‘round one’

OMG barrie is a #1 dman playing top pairing with durzi

I don’t care if trotz coaches them or Gallant or whoever

that bottom pairing playing top pairing in a 7 game series would have laughably bad stats

is this a serious thread ?
that team would have the worst record in the league

You guys have to remember the purpose of building the way the Leafs have with Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly through the draft and having these star players the start of their careers is having a very long window of contention. Whether or not you like how things have been advancing and how quickly is another matter, but it’s a long play.

Whether or not we can win one round isn’t the benchmark for success. Though of course they should get on that as soon as possible.

Yup. That's why every year as the TDL approaches, I'm advocating patience and cringing at all the "now's the time to go allin before our window closes" posts.

"All in" is probably a poor choice of words, but this year and next year are the obvious times to make moves because we know with certainty that the core four will be here through 22-23. We can't be certain beyond that (Matthews and Nylander go into their final contract years). Plus the fact management has stated they're in "win now mode" means draft picks, prospects and maybe roster players are on the table if the deal is right.

They're definitely not shedding players specifically for picks.

That defense would get carved up in a 7-game series and their offense lacks game-changers.

Having said that, Leafs lose in game 7 cause it's tradition.

We *can* go all in but obviously shouldn’t every year. To use Washington as an example they liberally traded blue chip prospects like Filip Forsberg for deadline junk. But also held onto their picks from time to time to draft guys like John Carlson and Evgeni Kuznetsov with their late firsts. Just be smart.
